If mesothelioma is found doctors may recommend an examination for a more accurate diagnosis. A biopsy is the removal a small piece of tissue to be tested. This test will reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma isn't spreading, doctors can remove the tumors. They will also offer an effective treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative care for the patient, including paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

The outlook for patients is worse when a mesothelioma has advanced. The tumors may become resistant to certain treatment and may recur. The doctor may suggest the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Options for surgery include cytoreduction and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than chemotherapy alone.
