Upgrades boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also increase bonuses such as Crit chance and PvE Damage.

For instance an item with the upgrade template that ends in % will suffer an attack damage of 3% each time it is upgraded (relative to its previous value).

The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the item's current level. The cost rises with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into weapons, armor and trinkets in order to give them a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. They can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors, trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades also have specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be placed in equipment that has a slot to accommodate them. The item must be at least upgraded to the blue level in order for the component to be inserted. Upgrade components, unlike other mods can only be applied once. They are not able to be replaced or applied multiple times. Infusions and enrichments are a particular type of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment, as well as some of the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or by completing a mission within the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade can include a suffix or prefix, modifying the name of the item to the upgrade (for examplethe "Canthan Armor Insignia' becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). The player can have a maximum of five boost upgrades at one time. Each upgrade increases the probability that a higher-tier version of the item will appear in the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to keep upgrading their gear even if they're uncertain of how much they'll increase after a future reset.

If a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process could be costly and there is a substantial chance that the item could become obsolete or even break if it fails; a failed upgrade will ruin Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder as well as the upgraded item. This is mitigated by the availability of cash shop items that double or even eliminate the chances of failure, and a few upgrades that give an additional benefit when they are inserted into an item.

Glyphs

Glyphs can be used to upgrade the Paragon Board by placing them in sockets that are specifically designed for. The majority of upgrades in the game can be replaced however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and replaced without restriction. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and re-placed using the help of a Black Lion Salvage Kit.

Each Glyph has a particular range of values that it can improve a statistic by, and the value is shown when you choose the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with a Glyph that is of the same or higher rank to boost the value of the Glyph.

Glyphs are available in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of the Gem Store bundle or purchase them with certain tools that are unlimited in use, and during Faction Crypt Raids. Every Faction Crypt can drop one of these Glyphs. There are some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

Once you have obtained the desired Glyphs You will have to attach them to your equipment. Leveling

The item upgrade system allows players to boost the effectiveness of certain items by adding upgraded components. This is commonly known as "upping". When the player upgrades the equipment they have it will be replaced by a new item. The same armor can be transformed into the form of a weapon or shield when upgraded.
