Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade item an item, the player needs to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.

Typically items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base while items with strong bases such as Eth titans don't change much in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Leveling

The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant variations from the previous versions. Gear is now categorized in tracks and each item is able to be upgraded so many times before it's "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level up, but the required materials do not increase as much. This allows players to focus their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the effect of those items, rather than dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.
