For one, the Q5's navigation system does not feature AI-powered obstacle avoidance technology and is therefore prone to become entangled in shoes and socks, and is unable to navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It doesn't also have a camera that can see around corners.

However, it's a good choice to consider, particularly if you're looking to save money on an iRobot Roomba and you have a bare-floored home or office. It's also very quiet and operates while you are at work or at school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming feature that's offered by the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping. It is dependent on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick very well and cannot handle dried-on debris. The Q5 has an auto-emptying dock, however. If you need to mop, the mopping pad can be swapped for a wet one in seconds.

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant automatic vacuum cleaner and mop cleaner that also has the ability to sweep floors. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it easy to clean and effective at tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also has strong suction and a self-emptying bin. It's the most efficient robot hoover for carpets, though it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop utilizes sensors that help it keep away from obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. You can alter its cleaning schedule and customize zones using the app that is well-designed. It comes with a battery life that is similar to other models.

The robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular design that appears much like a Roomba model than the bulky models of the competitors. It's one of our most attractive robot vacuums. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop to score an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is thanks to a mix of modern sensors, including a restructured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot in our tests that is fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it boasts the industry's highest suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mop pads.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface, and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit as well as Google Assistant. The only issue is that it's an eerily noisy device which could be problematic if you run it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to sleep.

It's also a bit costly but not as much as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally capable and better looking. This is a two-in-one vacuum that's very capable however, it's going to cost you more and produce more noise.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a lot of advanced features to help you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take care of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically emptys the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, washes and dries its mop pads.

The smart robot employs an array of LIDAR and structured light to map out floor plans and identify obstacles, making it more efficient than some of its premium rivals. It also has a front mounted camera for real-time hazards detection but this wasn't foolproof in our tests and was often confused with obstructions or power cords.

Its vacuum cleaner has the capacity to suction up to 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to accomplish the task. It also comes with an attribute called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas in the house depending on how dirty these areas tend to be.

For larger houses it's worth looking for a model that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to instruct the robot to clean a particular area of your home using the app or via voice commands. A stair mode can be beneficial if you have large furniture. For busy families recharge functions and resume feature that allows your robot vacuums that mop vacuum to resume where it left off could be very beneficial.
