A biopsy involves the removal of just a small portion of affected tissue to test. This test will reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is in an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and provide an effective treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has spread within the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative care for the patient, including paracentesis, which drains the abdominal fluid.

The outlook for patients is worse when a mesothelioma has progressed. The reason for this is that the tumors are able to become resistant to certain treatments, and they may develop a recurrence. The doctor might suggest a combination of chemotherapy and surgery. Surgery options include cytoreduction combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis of a patient.
