If mesothelioma does not have spread it is possible to remove the tumors. They will also offer a curative treatment. The specialist can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They may then recommend palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis, which drains the fluid from the abdomen.

When a mesothelioma is advanced the chances of survival are less. The tumors may become resistant to treatment and recur. The doctor might suggest a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgery options include cytoreduction along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the prognosis of the patient.
