Machine learning can help diagnose ADHD

The diagnosis of adult ADHD has proved to be difficult. Despite the recent development of machine learning methods and technologies, diagnostic tools for ADHD remain largely subjective. This can lead to delay in the beginning of treatment. To improve the efficiency and consistency of the process, researchers have tried to create a computer-based ADHD diagnostic tool called QbTest. It is the result of a computerized CPT and an infrared camera that measures motor activity.

An automated diagnostic system could reduce the time it takes to diagnose adult ADHD. Patients would also benefit from early detection.

Several studies have investigated the use of ML for detecting ADHD. The majority of these studies utilized MRI data. Other studies have examined the use of eye movements. The advantages of these methods include the accessibility and reliability of EEG signals. These measures are not sensitive or specific enough.

Researchers at Aalto University studied the eye movements of children in a virtual reality game. This was done to determine whether a ML algorithm could distinguish between ADHD and normal children. The results showed that a machine learning algorithm can recognize ADHD children.

Another study assessed the effectiveness of different machine learning algorithms. The results showed that a random forest method gives a higher percentage of robustness as well as higher rates of risk prediction errors. Similarly, a permutation test proved more accurate than random assigned labels.
