The outlook for patients is worse when mesothelioma is advanced. This is because the cancer can become resistant to certain treatments and may be recurred. The doctor might recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy on its own to improve the outlook of a patient.
