Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and equipment with new affixes, boosting the base stats of the item or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory, and also access the kiln.

Typically items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a stronger base, while items with strong bases like eth titans do not vary significantly in their stats after being upgraded.

Upgrade components

Upgrade components can be added to armors, weapons trinkets, weapons and gathering tools. They give you an attribute bonus, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, found in loot, dropped by enemies or as rewards from missions or chests. Certain upgrades also have cosmetic effects. If a player upgrades a gathering tool, and replaces the glyphs by a different one the old one will be returned to their inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will damage it, except for inscribed glyphs that can be swapped.

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system differs from previous versions in some important ways. Gear is now categorized in tracks and each item can only be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The upgrade costs increase with each level, but the materials required for upgrades do not. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few important items to maximize their impact, rather than spreading out the upgrade costs across multiple items.

This allows the item to receive new upgrade components and a higher chance of success. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Energy, and it resets to 0 on failure or increases when the upgrade is successful.

If an item does not attain its maximum level, the NPC offers the player the choice to transfer it to another character and then re-infuse it with a different set or upgrades. This process can take up to two hours and will cost the same amount of material, though it will have a lower chance of success.
