Upgrades can boost the value of weapons, armors and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like Crit chance and damage from PvE.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, weapons and armor to provide them with a boost in stats or to add an additional effect. These can be obtained by making crafts, buying from vendors or trading with other players or looting. Some upgrades can also be accompanied by specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment with a slot for them; the item must be at a minimum upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be used. Unlike other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced with upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a specific kind of upgrade component used for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment and some of the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and enrichments can be retrieved by salvaging ascended gear or completing an elite task in the Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall campaigns.

A prefix or suffix can be added to an upgrade, changing the name of the item it's applied to (for instance, 'Canthan Armor Insignia',' changes to Canthan Armor Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to make stronger versions of the equipment that require fewer Upgrade Crystals than are required to achieve the same upgrade level through normal methods.

A boost upgrade can alter the defense or attack attributes of a weapon or armor. These upgrades are available to be made from the Portative Forging Station once the player completes the cutscene and defeats the Crazed Mechanical. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them from the cash shop or by getting them from enemies while upgrading other equipment.

Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a better-quality version of an item will be revealed at the next reset. This gives the player an incentive to continue improving their equipment even if they're uncertain of how much they'll improve after a future reset.

Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process can be costly and there is a high possibility that the item will be obsolete or even break when it fails; a failed upgrade will cause the destruction of Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. When a player upgrades an item to a higher level, the original item is replaced with a different item of the same kind. The same armor will be upgraded to an weapon or shield when upgraded. The new item comes with its own set bonus. This can be a disadvantage because it can make the item more expensive if you don't need it.

Upgrades to items can be rerolled if the player has enough tokens to do this. The failure rate increases when you exceed the maximum number. Failures will result in the item reverting to its original state and the player having to purchase more resources than if they had stopped upgrading after the maximum amount.

If an item does not upgrade the amount of experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. The item also loses any bonuses it gained, such as chances to be crit damage to attack, other effects (such as an increase in healing over time or reloading speed). The player is able to use their weapon or armor even after the failure.

Whenever an item is upgraded, the upgrades are applied in order from lowest to highest. This means that if a weapon gains an increase in crit chance, the increase is applied prior to any increase in attack damage. The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is determined on the rarity rating as well as the number of upgrade slots.
