When mesothelioma is detected experts may suggest an examination for a more precise diagnosis. A biopsy is the process of removing a small portion of the affected tissue for testing. This procedure can reveal whether the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid), the sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If the mesothelioma is at an early stage doctors can remove all the tumors and offer curative treatment. The doctor will also be able to determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatments for the patient, for example paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has advanced. The cancers can become resistant to certain treatments and then recur. The doctor might recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's prognosis than merely chemotherapy alone.
