A biopsy is the process of removing a small portion of the affected tissue to test. This test will reveal if the mesothelioma is epithelioid (epidermoid) or sarcomatoid (sarcomatoid) or biphasic.

If mesothelioma has reached an early stage, doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer an effective treatment. The specialist can also determine if the cancer has been able to spread to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, including paracentesis that drains abdominal fluid.

The prognosis is worsened when a mesothelioma has advanced. This is because the tumors may become resistant to certain treatments, and they may recur. The doctor may suggest the combination of surgery and chemotherapy. The surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely than chemotherapy by itself to improve the outlook of patients.
