Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric statistics on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like Crit chance and PvE Damage.

If the weapon's upgrade template is %, it will be able to gain 3percent of its previous damage each time it is upgraded.

The cost of upgrading an item is determined by the item's level. The cost increases with item's level.

Components

Upgrade components can be incorporated into trinkets, armor, and weapons in order to provide them with a boost in stats or an extra effect. These can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors trading, or looting. Certain upgrades also come with specific cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components can be inserted into equipment with a slot for them; the item must be at the very least upgraded to blue level to allow a component to be applied. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once; they cannot be applied repeatedly or replaced by new upgrades. Infusions and Enrichments are kind of upgrade component that is used to upgrade non-amulet legendary or ascending equipment, as in some items that aren't ascended. Enrichments and Infusions can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade may be prefixed or a suffix, modifying the name of the equipment with the upgrade (for instancefor example 'Canthan Armor Insignia is changed to Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Rarity or Level of an item, which lets players to create stronger versions using the smallest amount of Upgrade crystals than they need to reach the same level using standard methods.

A boost upgrade can modify the attack or defense attributes of a weapon or armor. These upgrades are available to be made using the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed Mechanical. These upgrades can be obtained by purchasing them from the cash shop, or by obtaining them from enemies when upgrading other gear.

Each upgrade increases the chance that a higher-tier version of the item will be revealed in the next reset. This gives the player some incentive to continue upgrading their gear even if they're not sure of how much it will improve following a subsequent reset.

The process of upgrading an item can be expensive and it's possible that the item will eventually become obsolete or even break when the upgrade is unsuccessful. Upgrade Crystals and assist powder are also destroyed when the upgrade fails. Cash shop items can be used to decrease or eliminate the chance of failure. Some upgrades also give the player a bonus if they are reinserted.

Glyphs

Glyphs are upgrade elements that can be inserted into special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs increase the power of all nodes within their radius, including pre-existing affixes on equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in various ways, and we recommend getting them up to level 15 whenever you can.

You'll often see in the endgame that placing Glyphs is the most effective method to upgrade your gear. These are the only upgrade component which can be upgraded to level 15 and provide significant boosts to your power on the Paragon Board.

Glyphs, the sole upgrade component that can be removed without restriction and replaced again are the most popular. The only exception is legendary equipment that requires a Black Lion Salvage Kit to salvage and then re-install.

Each Glyph has a certain range of values it can improve a stat by, and the value is displayed when you select the Glyph in your inventory. You can replace it with another Glyph that is of the same or higher rank to boost the value of the Glyph.

Glyphs can be found in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of a Gem Store bundle or purchase, with certain unlimited-use tools as well as during Faction Crypt Raids. Every Faction Crypt could drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs that you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.

After you have acquired the desired Glyphs you'll require them to be put on your equipment. Each Glyph unlocks a unique bonus that boosts a particular set of stat nodes within a radius around the Glyph. It can be +40 for one of your primary stats or +25 for two of your secondary stats depending on the Glyph.

Leveling

Some upgrades require a special ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained by completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or purchased from some NPCs. Each completed Upgrade Recipe earns a number of Technology Points. These points can be used to upgrade the item, and when enough points have been earned, the upgrade can be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When an individual player improves an item the original item will be replaced with the new item. This means that the same armor piece will become an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item comes with its own set bonus. This could be a problem in that it could make the item more expensive if you don't require it.

If the player has enough tokens they can reroll item upgrades. The item will be replaced by a brand new one that is based on a level 1 base and completely different bonuses. This can be useful, but should not be repeated often since it can waste resources.

Certain upgrades can boost their value, allowing players to customize their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, since it grants an increase in power if the player is repeatedly in or exits the water. This can be upgraded several times, each time raising the max roll by an increment of 10. This item is highly valuable in PvP. A properly rolled version can be worth 50 times the value of a unupgraded counterpart.

Requirements

The ability to upgrade items allows players to boost the level of their equippable equipment--armor, weapons, and trinkets above ilvl 385--by providing the appropriate currency and items to an NPC that upgrades items. Upgrades to armor set pieces also increase its base defense and weapon upgrades items increase their base damage as well as the required strength and dexterity.

Each item can be upgraded a maximum of five times, except for hero gear which can have eight upgrades. Each time you upgrade an item, it has an opportunity to fail. The rate of failure increases as you exceed the maximum amount of upgrades. Failures will result in the item level upgrade returning to its original condition, which requires the player to purchase more items than if they stopped upgrading after the maximum number.

If an item is not able to upgrade the amount of experience in its growth bar is reset to zero. The item will also lose any bonuses it gained like chances to be crit damage to attack, additional effects (such as an increase in healing over time, or reloading speed). The player is able to use their weapon or armor after the failure.

When an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from the lowest to highest. This means that when a weapon gains an increase in the chance of crit the increase is applied before any increase in attack damage. The amount of resources required to upgrade an item is based on the rarity rating and number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equivalent to its value. For example, a common item might have five upgrades at a cost. 25,600 Technology Points and a 4x Quality Improvement Chance--whereas hero grade items will come with a much lower cost for each additional upgrade.

Premium items might require different upgrades than regular gear. For instance, they may need less sowels, however they may require more minerals and orons. Whatever the case, players will have to visit the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine with each piece of equipment they want to upgrade. In addition to the upgrade costs listed above, each upgrade will require an individual amount of ingredients for upgrading.
