Upgrades to items are a common and important way to improve the performance of many items in Path of Exile. They can be a fantastic source of extra damage, more AD or even more attaches.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to improve a stat or provide secondary effects in armor and weapons. They can be made through an process known as jewelry crafting, where you combine a gem with a number of specific chemicals at a table. The first trinket a player will unlock is the cloak. It gives a small, but useful bonus in speed of movement and the ability to escape. Then, they can get amulets, rings, and necklaces in the same way to how a player can acquire armor and weapons. Each piece of equipment comes with one upgrade slot that can accommodate either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be used on any piece of equipment. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced and only work with certain trinkets.
