If the mesothelioma is at an early stage doctors can remove all of the tumors and offer the best treatment. The doctor can also determine whether the cancer has expanded to the abdomen. They can then prescribe palliative treatment for the patient, such as paracentesis that drains fluid from the abdomen.

If a mesothelioma has advanced and the prognosis is less favorable, it becomes more difficult to treat. The tumors may become resistant to certain treatments and recur. The doctor may recommend a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. Surgical options include cytoreduction surgery along with hyperthermic intraperitoneal therapy. This combination is more likely to improve a patient's outlook than chemotherapy on its own.
