Upgrades can boost the value of certain numeric stats on armor, weapons and rings. Upgrades also boost bonuses like Crit chance and PvE Damage.

For example a weapon that has the upgrade template ending in % will suffer an attack damage of 3% each time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).

Components

Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armor and trinkets to provide them with a boost in stats or add a bonus effect. These can be obtained by crafting, buying from vendors, trading with other players, or looting. Some upgrades also have special cosmetic effects.

Upgrade components are only available to devices that have slots. The item must be at least upgraded to blue before the component can be applied. Like other mods, upgrade components can only be used once and cannot be applied multiple times or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a particular type of upgrade component that is used to upgrade item non-amulet ascended or legendary equipment as well as the back items that are not ascending. Infusions and Enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment from the ascended state or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.

An upgrade can include a suffix or prefix changing the name of the equipment to which it is used (for examplefor example "Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Some upgrades boost an item's Mark Level or Rarity, which allows players to create stronger versions of that equipment with the smallest amount of Upgrade Crystals than would be required to reach the same upgrade level through normal methods.

A 'boost upgrade' can modify the attack or defense properties of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades can be made using the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed mechanic. These upgrades are available for purchase them from the cash shop or getting them from enemies while upgrading other equipment.

The player can have a maximum of five boost upgrades at one time. Each upgrade increases the likelihood that a higher-level version of the item will appear at the time of the next reset. This gives players an incentive to upgrade their gear even in the event that they don't know what will be improved following the reset.

The boost upgrade may be successful or not, the process could be costly and there is a substantial risk that the item may be obsolete or even break if it fails. A failure to upgrade can destroy the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. Cash shop items can be used to minimize or eliminate the chance of failure. Glyphs can be found in the Black Lion Trading Post as part of a Gem Store bundle or purchase, with certain unlimited-use tools, and during Faction Crypt Raids. Leveling

The item upgrading system lets players increase the stats of specific items by putting upgraded components in them. This is often referred to as "upping". Every upgradeable item has a level, which determines its final upgraded stats. Upgraded items are able to be leveled until they reach a maximum level of 385 ilvl. Each item level requires a different amount of components and the costs for upgrading increase as the item gets advanced in level.

Certain upgrades require a certain ingredient to activate. This ingredient is obtained from completing Upgrade Recipes. These recipes are available in the upgrade tab of a crafting table, or bought from NPCs. Each Upgrade Recipe that is completed earns some Technology Points. These points can be used to level up the item, and once enough points have been earned, the upgrade will be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.

When a player upgrades an item, the base item is replaced with a new item of the same type. This means that the same piece of armor will be transformed into the form of a shield or weapon when upgraded. The new item comes with its own bonus. This could be a drawback, as the item can be more expensive even if you do not require it.

If the player has enough tokens, they can roll item upgrades. The item will be replaced by the same item, but it has a level 1 basis and totally different bonuses. This is a good idea but it shouldn't be done often as it could waste resources.

Some upgrades can be rerolled multiple times to increase their value, giving players the ability to alter their gear. An excellent example is Dolphin's Gift, which gives an advantage when a player repeatedly enters and leaves the water (or does not swim as a dolphin). A well-rolled version could be worth as much as 50x the value of a non-upgraded version.

Requirements

Item upgrading allows players to increase the quality of their equippable equipment - weapons, armor, and trinkets above ilvl 385--by presenting the appropriate currency and items to an NPC who upgrades items. Upgrades to armor set pieces also improve the strength of their base defense and weapon upgrades items boost their base damage and also increase their strength and dexterity.

Each item can be upgraded a maximum of five times, except for hero gear, which can be upgraded up to eight times. Every time you upgrade an item it is given the chance to fail. The rate of failure increases as you go beyond the maximum number of upgrades.
