People who worked with asbestos in these conditions are at risk of developing mesothelioma.

The non-occupational exposure to asbestos can cause mesothelioma of the peritoneal region. Studies have proven that the risk of mesothelioma is increased with each year spent in asbestos exposure. In one case-control study in Los Angeles and New York doctors compared the professions that were listed on death certificates of the men who died from peritoneal mesothelioma to their interviews with their next-of-kin.
