Items and Upgrade Components in World of Warcraft
Upgrades can boost the value of armor and weapons. However upgrading common equipment is not worth the investment as rare or unique equipment will outclass it quickly.
A product can be upgraded up to six times. Each upgrade will increase the gauge of the item.
Glyphs

Upgrades are only available for items with an average rarity of blue or greater which includes items that drop from chests at the end in Factions and Nightfall campaign. Upgrade components are not able to be used to create new items.
