Bedside Sleeper Cot
A bedside sleeper cot (also called bassinet) is attached to the side of your bed so that your baby is close enough for feeding at night, but is safe in their own space to sleep. Our mums appreciate that they are simple to reach and can also swivel or drop the sides to get closer.
Safety
A bedside crib travel sleeper cot permits babies to be within reach of their parents sleeping in their beds for nighttime feeding, as well as monitoring and comfort, without putting them at risk with bed-sharing (which could lead to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). The cots comply with NHS guidelines for co-sleeping and are recommended by childcare experts such as Dr McKenna director of the Mother-Baby Behavioural Sleep Laboratory.
They also promote healthy attachment and breastfeeding by keeping babies close. This will help them reach their developmental milestones. It's important that parents look for bassinets that are simple to clean and safe to use. ensure they have been tested and approved by a reputable agency like JPMA.
In 2023, ASTM updated its version of the bedside sleeper voluntary standard F2906 in response to newer models that convert a bassinet into the bedside sleeper by lowering one side rail to an adult bed, which allows some portions of the lower part to be elevated height above the mattress, presenting an increased risk of the entrapment of. The CPSC direct final rule incorporates the 2023 revision by reference to the existing mandatory standards in section 104 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008(CPSIA) for sturdy baby or toddler products which have been used for longer than 180 days. It is expected to reduce the chance of injury.
Be aware that a bedside rocking crib or bassinet is not recommended to be used with pillows, blankets or other bedding. This could pose a suffocation risk as many young children aren't able to raise their heads high enough to keep them from soft objects and a reclined position could cause the head to slide forward blocking their airway. Always put your child on their back when using a bassinet, crib or play yard. Use an appropriate fitted sheet that meets the federal requirements.
Convenience
It is important to keep your baby close throughout the night. This can help create a bond between newborns and parents. Bedside sleeper bassets are secured to the sides of your mattress, allowing you to easily reach your baby for diaper changes, feedings and comforting in middle of the night. We searched for models with mesh sides that were translucent enough to see through, so you could monitor your baby without having to leave your bed.
It is important to ensure that the bassinet is in compliance with the requirements of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) specifications and is certified safe for infants. It is recommended to choose a bassinet with a wide base and a strong attachment system. A mattress that is breathable should be included.
Look for a model with a manual rocking feature that's gentle on your baby and can aid in settling them down. Some models have a tilt feature which can be beneficial for infants suffering from colic or reflux. However it should only be used under the advice of a doctor or health care professional.
Some bassinets include a mattress however, others require you to purchase a mattress separately. Purchase a mattress that is designed to fit the travel bedside crib sleeper. Mattresses that are second-hand can be too soft, and could pose a SIDS risk. You'll also need to invest in an air-tight fitted sheet and muslin blanket for your baby. Check the fabric lining and foam mattress are machine washable for ease of cleaning. A storage shelf or a basket can be a useful feature to store things like nappies clothing, muslins, and clothes. You can also find models with wheels that allow for mobility around the house.
Support for Breastfeeding
If you decide to breastfeed the baby, a cot with a bedside crib travel cot position can help you to get the most out of your evening feedings. By attaching to your bed, it permits you to reach easily when baby wakes to feed. The cot's side can drop down to create a shallow bassinet for safe side-by-side sleeping. Some models also tilt to support reflux.
The curving sides of the cot mean that it's easy for you to see your baby, and they won't roll out of the side when you pick them up for feeding. Some large bedside cot cribs come with an automatic rocking feature which can help your child relax and encourage them to fall asleep quicker after a meal.
A soft fabric, as well as removable and machine-washable bedding can be beneficial in keeping your baby clean. Some models feature gentle rocking and vibration features that can help soothe your baby to sleep. The storage space is a bonus for breastfeeding mums.
It is a good idea for breastfeeding mothers to share a bed with their babies. This allows them to form bonds of friendship as they sleep. Research has revealed that infants who are breastfed and sleep together have better outcomes than infants who are fed through bottles. But, it is crucial that you know the safety risks and practices involved in bed-sharing with a newborn baby and choose a safe mattress for your infant.
Some in-bed sleeping bags have soft surfaces on the edges, which could trap your baby. Also, be careful not to allow the sleeper in bed slide backwards, creating a gap that your baby may crawl into or roll over.
