In Nioh the game uses Sets to create special effects when players wear armor from a particular armor set. These bonuses, known as Set Bonuses, are comparable to and sometimes better than Effects. While it is not explained in-universe why the armor sets must be worn together to create these effects, they do give an interesting change of pace when playing the game. The armor sets with Set Bonuses can be found in many places around Hyrule including the Dark Moon Temple and Twilight Temple.
Every piece of equipment in the Set has a number of Set bonuses that go along with it. The tooltip on the bottom of the item will inform you which Set Bonuses are offered. Set Bonuses are displayed in a box with the red border.
Certain of these Set Bonuses are only available to a specific piece of equipment. For instance, if you equip the full Phantom Armor set you will get +8 defense (compared to the normal +3 defense included in most equipment). Other sets can only be obtained through specific quests or buying them through the Auction House.

While Set Bonuses cannot stack within a set, they do stack between sets. This is great for those that want to use the most efficient combination of sets. It does require some planning. Since set bonuses only affect the shell of the equipment (not the armoring, mod or enhancement) You must be cautious about where you place them.
It is important to note that the value of the bonus of a set will not change even if your exemplar level is higher than three levels lower than the minimum allowed for an Enhancement. This rule doesn't apply to purple (Very rare) Sets PvP Sets, Sets for PvP and Archetype Origin Sets. Their set bonuses will function regardless of the exemplar level.
