Newborn Bedside Cot

A newborn bedside cot is a small sleeper that allows babies to share the same room as their parents, without the risk of sleeping together (which the AAP cautions against due suffocation and SIDS). It also makes middle-of-the-night nursing sessions and baby care simpler.

This sleeper has a sturdy mattress that is designed to help babies' backs and decrease the chance of SIDS. It can be swiveled on your adult bed so that you can lift your baby to cuddle them at sunrise or during late night nursing.

A bedside crib, also known as a bassinet or cosleeper, is a bassinet style crib that can be attached to your bed. This allows you to reach your baby easily and safely for a mid-night feed or cuddles. These are ideal for mothers and new parents recovering after a c section as they allow the baby to be easily accessible without having to get up from bed.

There are a variety of designs available, from the basic ones that have an upside-down side to more sophisticated models that offer numerous adjustment options, like incline or height. Most can be converted into an independent crib once your baby gets older and has a longer sleep time at night.

Maxi-Cosi Lora is one our favorites. It was nominated in the Best Cot category for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards. MFM home tester Emily said she was impressed by how chic and modern the design was. She also liked the fact that it can be used as a bassinet or clipped to your existing bed for a safe side-by-side sleep. She also appreciated the soft mattress that has passed our test for firmness and the fact that it features a manual rocking feature that can be set to a slight tilt for reflux sufferers.

She didn't like the fact that it had a non-mesh panel on the bottom and thought it was too bulky to move from room to room. When folded into its travel bag she found it quite heavy to carry up the stairs.

It is important that your baby is sleeping on a firm and not a soft mattress. Infants don't have the motor control to turn over and a soft mattress could increase the chance of being suffocated. The soft, breathable fabric and skin-friendly materials make this mattress comfortable for your baby but firm enough for safety.

Mum home test Jasmin was pleased with the fact that the crib does not take up much space in her bedroom, and she found it to be the perfect size for a newborn. She also noted that the mattress was of high-quality, unlike others which seem thin and flimsy. She also loves the fact that it has a storage space underneath for clothes and bedding which other bassinets don't have.

Mehack is an MFM mother who has tested the product at home, likes the ability to remove the wall on the side to allow for easier access to your baby. She also loves the fact that the legs can be put under the bed to make it look less bulky and occupy less space on the floor. She's also amazed by how easy it was to move around the house in the event of check-ins and feedings in the middle of the night.

There's also an enormous basket that can be used to store toys, blankets, and other essentials. It's also light and easy to put together and is ideal to travel with your baby.

Safety

It is important to think about the safety of the crib for your newborn. The official safe sleep guidelines from both the Lullaby Trust and NHS recommends that babies not sleep in parent's beds due to the dangers of overheating, suffocation and a higher chance of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Bassinets for bedside rocking crib use allow parents to keep their babies close, which allows for nighttime feedings as well as comforting and monitoring without needing to leave their bed.

This close proximity can also support breastfeeding mothers, as it lets them attend to the baby's needs while also sleeping. This can help maintain milk supply and encourage breastfeeding. Some bedside co sleeper cot cots have adjustable height options, which will help ensure that the bassinet is at an appropriate height for mother and baby to allow easy access for middle-of-the-night feedings or care.

Many bassinets come with a firm mattress, which is designed to reduce the risk of suffocation and is in line with industry standards. This is essential because newborn's bones are soft and aren't fully developed. They must be supported to prevent damage. The mattress should be covered in a fitted cover to reduce the risk of suffocation caused by dust mites or other allergens, and kept clean and free of irritants.

Some cribs for large bedside cot use can be tilted. This is helpful for babies suffering from digestive or reflux issues. But, it should be done slowly and with care. Avoid placing pillows, duvets, or padded crib bumpers inside the bassinet. These could create the risk of suffocation to your baby.

It's also worth considering an infant bassinet that has a secure attachment system that can be easily fixed to your existing bed without the need for tools. This feature can be particularly beneficial for parents who struggle to lift their baby in and out of the cot or who are worried about accidentally rolling over in the night. If your bassinet does have a secure attachment system, it's recommended to regularly make sure it's secure and that there aren't any gaps or loose parts that could cause danger.

Avoid toys, bumpers and pillows since they could fall on your baby and cause danger of suffocation. If your baby is used to being swaddled, you can use a swaddle or baby sleep bag for the first few weeks, although it is best to remove it when possible after they've gained the strength to unwrap themselves.
