What is a bedside crib?

A bedside crib (also known as bassinet or co-sleeper) is a small baby crib that can be attached to your adult bed, allowing your infant to sleep comfortably next to you. It is a safe method of co-sleeping that doesn't increase the risk of SIDS like bedsharing. It can also help you bond with the newborn baby.

They have one side that can be adjusted to allow you to reach your baby easily at night to soothe and feed them. This is especially useful for mothers who are recovering from an op. Many are also portable or foldable, so you can bring them along on trips and use them as a sleeping solution for newborns who aren't yet ready to move to a larger cot.

Look for a crib with a mattress that is breathable, as well as a protective cover that will shield your baby from stains. You might also want to buy baby-safe accessories such as the blanket or teether.

If you are looking for a more long-term solution, some cribs come with conversion kits that let you transform them into a toddler bed or cot when the time is appropriate. This is a great way to extend their life and making the transition more seamless. Some have a removable top section that can be converted into an infant bed, and some can be used on either the regular or high-rise adult bed. This is a great option for families who plan to travel frequently or change between bedrooms in the evening. You should also think about the size of your room to ensure that you can fit the crib comfortably. Many cribs have risers which can be used to create an incline for babies with reflux.

The airflow mattresses are deluxe and provide an ideal sleeping surface while the ventilation panels keep your baby cool. There are six different height settings, including an incline setting that can aid in reducing reflux and congestion.

Anna found the CoZee to provide a safe, comfortable place to sleep for her baby. It was a pleasure to not move like other models, so she wasn't woken up at night while trying to comfort her child during feedings. She also loved that the side was lowered so she didn't need to reach out over her partner to lift the baby for feedings at night.

The CoZee is available in charcoal and oak and was a stylish addition to the bedroom. It's more stylish than the other cribs we've tested that are usually utilitarian. It's also fairly light at just 11kg and comes with a carry case which allows you to take it away on holidays or when you move house. The only additional items you'll need to buy are a waterproof sheet and a co-sleeping safety strap. There are step-by-step directions and illustrations to guide you through the process when you first open the box, making it a one-person task when needed.

The Maxi-Cosi Lora

The Iora is a bassinet designed for infants designed to make parents feel more connected to their baby bedside crib while they sleep. It adjusts up and down and can be moved through three slide positions to fit next to the bed of the parent, or in the corner of the room to ensure that your baby is close at hand. The mesh siding is breathable, allowing air to circulate through and allows you to glance at your baby. And you can store additional pajamas and other items in the large storage basket underneath.

As opposed to other bedside crib options The Iora folds flat and comes with a bag for travel so that it can be taken anywhere. Our mom testers were able to move it from room to room, and believed that it was a good size for a bedside crib travel cot, and not too big or too small. The large storage basket is perfect to store extra bedding or nappies.

This is a great choice for parents who wish to co-sleep but don't want to share their bed. Or if one of the partners has mobility issues like arthritis or back pain. Our mom testers are thrilled with the convenience of being able to access their baby in the Iora and it also has an adjustable reflux incline that can help with gas.

Our mums appreciate the fact that it meets NICE guidelines which state that you should place the infant in a crib or Moses basket on its own (with no blankets, toys pillows, etc.). They also state that the mattress is firm and comfortable for baby and is easy to find sheets for. It's not as light as the other cribs that are smaller on our list, so if you prefer something lighter and easier for you to move, choose another alternative.
