Armour is designed to protect animals or people from harm or injury from direct physical attack or from a variety of activity or environmental hazards. In the past, armour was typically made from fabric or leather, but later metal protections were also used, especially in military applications such as heavy cavalry or combat drones.

As with weapons there are a variety of ways in which armor can be upgraded, however, most of them will require a visit to one of the four Great Fairy Fountains located throughout Hyrule. There are two NPCs who can upgrade your weapons: the Blacksmith Hewg in the Roundtable Hold hub area and the Smithing Master Iji in the Road to the Manor hub area. Both of these NPCs will take your Smithing Stones and Runes in exchange for a more powerful version of the weapon and an upgrade.

Prioritize upgrading your top-in-slot items first. Then upgrade those that you're not likely to replace in the near future. Upgrade your weapon first, and then upgrade your shoulders, chest feet, hands, and shoulders in case you intend to play in a melee-based build. The same principle applies to Magic and Utility Items. But, depending on your style of play, certain procs will be more beneficial than others. Armour is not any different, with some Reforges being better than others.

Magic Items

A character can upgrade only one magic item level upgrade at one time. If an upgrade project is cancelled, any subsequent upgrades for that item will not begin. Upgraded magic items cost twice as much gold to create or purchase, but can provide additional benefits.

A magical item upgrading could be any item with special properties or effects. These are typically weapons, but they can also be shields, armors and cloaks, as well as potions. They can also be scrolls, rings or other items. Some of these items are telepathic.

Most magic items can have their abilities enhanced. This could make them more beneficial to a player or help them overcome a difficult encounter. Infused weapons can offer an additional amount of damage to a specific enemy type, for example. This is especially useful for characters who have reached the point where they're likely to face one type of monster repeatedly in dungeons.

An infused ring might confer immunity to bludgeoning, piercing or slashing injuries from non-magical attacks (not even silvered ones) until the next time the character is taking a long rest. This is particularly beneficial for melee martial characters or anyone looking to avoid buying a shield.

Certain items enchanted by magic have special powers that let the character cast spells in addition to the ones on the list of spells for their class. This can be useful for characters that have difficulties keeping their spell slots full due to multiclassing. These enchanted items typically require an Intelligence (Arcana) check prior to use, and the spell's effectiveness is determined by rolling on a table based on the number of Intelligence points expended.

Other objects that are enchanted can allow the character's appearance be changed, or they could even create a completely new one. These items can be especially beneficial for characters who have been forced to leave their home, or are in a location that they might not be welcome. A magical item upgrader could grant them invisibility or make them invisible to everyone except the chosen person.

Utility Items

Utility items are anything that does not fall into the categories of Clothing or Armor and come with a range of capabilities. Contrary to Weapons and Armor and Clothing, no utility item will be in conflict with the other. The majority of utility items have a passive effect that the player can activate by using them, but some have additional abilities that activate when the user presses an action button or activates the ability.

The Flashlight is the most commonly used utility item. It is used to illuminate the surrounding area. Other items that are useful include the Helicopter Cap and Rocket Boots which allow the player float in mid-air while moving and the Jetpack which allows the player to accelerate in all directions while on the ground. In the Engineering section, you can quickly create a variety of utility items, while others are available only through Research projects or experimental projects on the Proving Ground.

The majority of utility items provide the player with an advantage in navigation or enhance the effectiveness of a particular combat skill. Sharpening stones, crafted by a Weaponsmith, increase Power and Ferocity while Maintenance Oils, created by the Huntsman can increase concentration and healing power. Other utility items, such as Writs and Theses crafted by the Scribe can be used to give the player either a boost in Damage or Condition Damage.

XCOM soldiers can equip a single utilitarian item to begin the campaign. During the Alien Hunters downloadable content, additional slots can be obtained by equipping a Grenade Launcher. This enables players to utilize an Smoke Grenade or Bomb while an offensive grenade is kept in the main slot.
