Item upgrades allow players to increase the level of equippable weapons and armor. This boosts the stats of the item and can also add buffs or rerolls on an affix.
It is important to remember that upgrading your magic and common gear isn't always worth the cost. Rare and Unique equipment will quickly surpass modernized magic and common equipment.
Cost
When a player decides to upgrade an item, they have to spend Gold to upgrade the item. The cost of upgrading an item is contingent on its current level and the upgrade type selected. For example upgrading a weapon will generally be less expensive than upgrading armor, as weapons have lower requirements for level. The amount of Gold required for upgrading increases when the item is upgraded to the next level.
The upgraded items will also have improved stats that can improve its performance in a variety of ways. This could mean increasing the power of its attack and critical strike chance or damage per second. The upgraded item can also give additional bonuses to the unit it is equipped with. These upgrades can be used for a number of reasons, including to boost the overall strength of an individual or group unit. They can also have a major impact on gameplay.
The items can be upgraded at any NPC that is an upgrader in the game. These NPCs can be found in major questing areas, or capital cities. Players can also find upgraders when they visit dungeons with high-level bosses, or by talking to NPCs in their garrisons for their faction.
The item upgrade system in World of Warcraft provides players with the option of upgrading the levels of armor, weapons, and trinkets. This process is similar to the reforging process used in Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor. However, instead of using currency, players need to visit an item upgrader to complete the process.

Requirements

Rerolling a Rare item will result in a Normal version of the same type, whereas the rerolling of an Epic item will result in an Elite version of the same kind.

It's best to focus on the best-in-slot items first, since they will provide a greater return for your investment.
You can see the time required to complete an upgrade by opening your inventory and selecting the weapon, ship, or accessory. The upgrade items window will display the estimated completion time and the progress. In some cases you might be capable of speeding up the upgrade by applying a Glyph.
It is also possible to recover any or all of the upgrade components from an item by using a specific high-end salvage kit, which is offered by Black Lion Salvage and Ascended Salvage. Upgrade components can be integrated into weapons, armor, and trinkets to give an attribute benefit or an additional effect while the equipment is equipped. Certain upgrade components also have cosmetic effects. Upgrade components can be obtained through crafting, purchasing from vendors or the Trading Post, looting or receiving them as gifts. Additionally players can find upgraded items by using an Upgrade Extractor, or salvaging them using a top-quality salvage kit. Glyphs that are positioned on tools for gathering can be freely swapped.
By selecting the item and pressing the green button with a an arrow for rerolling the player can reroll it into another upgradeable item. The highest level of upgrade an item can achieve is determined by its tier and the quality.
