1. Roomba Q5 pro
The Q5 Pro, and its more expensive counterpart the Q7 Max Series are among the most powerful robotic vacuums we have test. They are equipped with motors that are top of the line and can suction up to 5,500 Pascals. Similar to other iRobots that are premium (including the most powerful model) they utilize intelligent mapping to design precise floorplans that avoid obstacles like furniture legs. The robots also feature Carpet Boost, a feature which boosts its power when it detects dirt on the carpet.
Both the Q5 as well as the Q7 Max Series get very high scores on our bare floor tests and are particularly effective at cleaning pet hair. However, they do have some flaws that prevent them from being our top pick. For one, the Q5's navigation doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to become entangled in socks and shoes and couldn't navigate rooms with a lot of people well in our tests. It doesn't also have a camera to see around corners.
However, it's a good choice, especially if you want to save money on an Roomba from iRobot, and you have a mostly bare-floor home or office. It's also very quiet and can be used while you're at work or going to school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming feature that's available in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes that don't hold on well and aren't able to take on dried-on debris. The Q5 does have a self-emptying dock, though. If you want to, you can swap the mopping pad for dry ones in a matter of minutes.
2. IRobot Roomba
The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can sweep floors. Its nimble navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also comes with a self-emptying bin as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot hoover for carpets, though it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.
This highly efficient mop and vacuum combination uses advanced sensor technology to stay clear of obstacles and pet waste and it learns the layout of your home over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. The app allows you to customize zones and change the cleaning schedule. It has a battery lifespan that is comparable to other models.
It is possible to instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when it's in a carpeted room to prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also ideal for getting under low-lying furniture and along baseboards. It doesn't perform as well on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.
In the course of testing, X30 Ultra was the quickest robot vacuum/mop that could clean an entire home and had 66 percent of its battery remaining. It did a decent cleaning job on different floors and rooms with different flooring types including certain area carpets. Its obstacle detection was top-of-the-line, and it nimbly avoided fake dog socks, turds, and bundles of cables.
It's a little more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however it offers superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically fills up its base, and also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming it, something hasn't been seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.
3. Roomba X40 from iRobot
This mop and vacuum combination features a sleek, circular look that looks much like a Roomba model than the bulky units of the competition. It's among our most attractive looking robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also its smartest. It features advanced features like Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads on its own).
It's also the only robotic vacuum or mop that scored an absolute 10 out of 10 in our tests. This is due to a mix of high-tech sensors including a structured lighting system, a camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that can fully autonomously refill and empty its base station and it has an its own self-cleaning mop pads.
The X40 is, like the other iRobot products, is simple to use. It comes with an intuitive mobile application interface and integrates with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device, which can be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work, or at night when you try to sleep.
It's also quite expensive, although it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or the Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra both of which are equally capable and more attractive. It's a dual-purpose vacuum that's very capable however, it will cost you more and create more noise.
4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra
The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop, with a variety of sophisticated features to help you get rid of your chores. Similar to Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-off cleaning machine that takes charge of both vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's dustbin, refills its water tank, and cleans and dry its mop pads.
The smart robot uses an array of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and identify obstacles, navigating more intelligently than its more expensive competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera for real-time hazard detection however, it wasn't foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.
The vacuum cleaner comes with a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to do the job. It also comes with an option known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for various areas of the house based on how dirty those areas tend to be.
For bigger homes it's recommended to choose one with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean a particular area of your home via the app or voice controls. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also useful. For busy families, a recharge function and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to resume where it left off can be very useful.
iRobot RX3
The RX3 is a smarter cleaner than you would think from its price. It vacuums well and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was only second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion that does a better job cleaning than the other robot mop cleaners we've tested. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying base that can be washed.
The iRobot application is designed to guide you through an exercise in mapping, which gathers information on your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. You can use it to create cleaning schedules, plan the perfect spot for cleaning or prioritise your dirtiest rooms for better performance. The app offers a variety of features, such as seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.
It is also able to reach corners and under furniture more easily because its shape is more rectangular. It also has strong 8,000 Pascal suction and combs that are intelligent for pet hair. And you can create a spot-clean that scours a specific area.
The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek and less expensive alternative to the iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It does a good job vacuuming, but is more prone to getting caught on low thresholds and is a bit more noisy than the other top robot vacuums uk vacuums we've tried. It also has an app that's less intuitive, and a smaller base station that can't double as a bin to empty.
