What is a bedside crib?

A bedside crib, also referred to as a bassinet or co-sleeper, is a small crib for babies that is attached to your adult bed. This allows your child to sleep with you in a safe environment. This is a form of co-sleeping that is safe and does not increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing, and can help you bond with your newborn.

They have an end that can be adjusted so that you can reach your baby easily at night to comfort and feed them. This is particularly beneficial for mums recovering from a c-section. Many of them are foldable or portable which means you can use them to travel or as an interim solution for babies who aren't ready to be able to transition to a larger crib.

Choose a crib that has an air-conditioned mattress, as well as an extra-safe cover that will shield your baby from staining. You might also want to purchase some baby-safe accessories like a blanket or teether.

If you're seeking a long-term solution cribs are available with conversion kits that allow you to convert them into a toddler bed or a cot for bedside when the time is appropriate. This is great for extending their life and making the transition smoother. Some have a removable top section that converts into an infant bed, and some can be used as a regular or a high-rise adult bed. This is a great option for families that plan on frequently traveling or switching rooms during the night. It is also important to consider how big your bedroom is to ensure that you can squeeze the crib comfortably. Many cribs come with an incline which can be used to create an incline for babies with reflux.

Anna discovered that the CoZee was a safe and comfy place to sleep for her baby. She loved that it didn't sway like other models, meaning it didn't wake her up at night when she was trying to comfort her baby for feeds. She also liked that the sides of the chair was lowered so that she didn't have to reach over her partner to carry the child out to feed them at night.

The CoZee is available in charcoal or oak and is a fashionable addition to any bedroom. It's more modern than other cribs we've tried that are usually utilitarian. It's also quite light at 11kg, and comes with a carrying case that allows you to take it with you on vacation or when you are moving home. You only need to purchase an extra waterproof sheet and safety strap to sleep with your partner. The instructions and images are easy to follow once you open the box.

The Maxi-Cosi Lora

The Iora is a bassinet for infants designed to help parents feel more connected to their baby while they sleep. It can be adjusted up and down and shifted through three different positions for sliding to fit under the parent's bed or in the corner to ensure that the infant is always at hand. The breathable mesh siding allows air to flow through and gives you a quick glance at your baby. You can also put away any extra pajamas or items in the large basket beneath.

Unlike some other smaller bedside crib and travel cot cribs, the Iora can be folded flat and comes with a carry-on bag so that it can be carried anywhere. It was easy to move from room to room, and our mom testers thought it was the perfect size for a bedside crib or cot crib. The large storage basket is ideal to store bedding and nappies.

This is an excellent choice for parents looking to sleep in a co-sleeping arrangement but do not want to share their beds, or whose partners might be prone to mobility issues, such as arthritis or back issues. Our mom testers loved the ease with which they could access their child while in the Iora and that it had an optional reflux incline that helped reduce gas.

Our moms love that it follows NICE guidelines. These include placing the infant in the Moses basket or crib on its own, without toys, blankets and pillows. They also state that the mattress is comfortable and firm for babies and is easy to find sheets for. It's not as light as other cribs that are smaller on our list, so if prefer something lighter and easier for you to move around, consider a different alternative.
