GreenPower Motor Company manufactures a complete range of medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles, which include lower-floor and high-floor models. Their flagship vehicle is the EV Star Cab & Chassis platform, which is able to accommodate a variety of body designs and upgrades for a variety of applications. The platform's clean sheet design approach allows for the optimal placement of battery packs and a lower center of gravity, resulting in higher payload to range ratios.
The EV Star REEFERX is designed to serve mid-to-last mile refrigerated delivery as well as catering applications. The refrigerated trucks of class 4 have a single interior wall structure, and higher insulation than traditional trucks, allow for seamless sanitation and better temperature control. They also have a longer life span. The EV Star REEFERX has a higher capacity for cargo and an industry-leading payload to allow for zero emission freight or passenger transport.
GreenPower has partnered with Perrone Robotics in order to equip the EV Star with TONY (To navigate you) autonomous vehicle systems, which will allow fleets to transition to autonomous vehicles. The AV Star will also be able to support wireless charging of 75 kW.
We had the chance to test drive the EV9 for several hours on a local freeway, and found it to be a breeze to drive and comfortable for long distances. The ride is smooth over ruts and bumps, while the EV9 does a great job of suppressing the sound of traffic and wind on the highway. The vehicle's acceleration is surprising fast, and it comes with adjustable regenerative brakes that permit "one-pedal driving" simply by releasing the accelerator.
The EV9 provides a large range and can be recharged in three hours or less at home, or by using any commercial charger. Drivers can choose between two modes of operation including eco mode and sports mode. Eco mode prioritizes the torque and cruise control, as well as handling while sport mode maximizes speed. Both modes are fun to drive and offer an experience unlike any other for those who haven't driven an electrical vehicle before.
GreenPower provides a variety of other EVs that include a multi-purpose all-electric minibus dubbed the EV Star. The EV Star is ADA-compliant and can be used as executive shuttles, microtransit and transit vanpools, buses, and paratransit vehicles.
GreenPower is already producing about 10 EV Star buses per month for the Jacksonville Transit Authority, which is attempting to replace their fleet of old diesel vehicles with 100 electric vehicles. With the Biden Administration aiming to electrify school buses across the country, GreenPower plans on ramping up production to meet demand. Their EV Star buses are the first of their kind to be Altoona tested and FMVSS certified. They are Buy America compliant, and ADA compliant. This means that they are eligible for federal assistance in transit. Keep an eye on us as we follow the AV Star on its demonstration tour later this year. We'll be sure to provide more information on this innovative EV!
