Size
The Joovy Kooper X2 is a side-by-side double stroller that can seat two children up to 50 lbs each. The seats are more spacious than similar strollers that are lightweight twin buggy and the canopies feature large SPF 50 sunshades that have peekaboo windows. Other important features include one-parent cup holders and a large, self-standing bin that can hold up 25 pounds; swing-away bar for children to climb out and in their seats; and the wheels can be locked with swivels to make it easier to maneuver on difficult terrain. This is a great choice for suburban and urban families. It also comes with the double kit which includes a newborn wedgie for an optimum lie-flat position.
Weight
The weight of double buggie will determine the ease of pushing. Typically, a light buggy will be more easy to lift and carry however, it may not have enough suspension to deal with bumps and uneven terrain.
Most double buggies have a maximum weight per seat, and some have overall frame maximums which is why it's essential to check the details of each model before you purchase. Some models fold down with seats removed to make them even smaller and lighter, which can be useful if storage space is at a premium.
The tri-fold doubles are typically the lightest of models since only one hand is needed to lift the bottom and back sections. They are also narrower than side by side buggies and are able to fit through most doors. The iCandy Geo 3 is one of the lightest trifold doubles on the market. It can comfortably accommodate twins or a baby and toddler.
Tandem buggies are ideal for families with growing children because they start as a single stroller double, but can be adapted to include a second seat such as a car seat or carrycot. Some, like the iCandy Orange, offer over 30 seating configurations, meaning they can expand with your family to accommodate the age of a third child. They are heavier than tri-folds however, since the weight is evenly distributed, they are much easier to move around.
Folding
The best double buggies designed for small children fold up in seconds. Our Lab experts appreciate this feature because it lets them squeeze the buggies in the back of their cars and also save storage space when they are not in use. The Joovy Kooper X2 for example includes straps that can be pulled up on the seats and then the whole thing folds down. Even our oldest testers were able to fold this tri-fold in just one hand.
The light Delta Children LX Side by Side is another good choice for a compact double buggie. Its lightweight weight is a plus but it also has some great features: nice-sized pop-out canopies with SPF 50 and peekaboo windows, swing-away bars that help little ones to climb into and out of the seats and reclined seating and leg rests designed for younger children.
Manoeuvrability
When selecting a compact double stroll, it's important to consider its maneuverability. This includes how easy it is for both children to travel in the buggy. Some pushchairs are better than others at this such as the iCandy Orange's "cinema chair" (where the back is elevated).
Buggies with narrow tandems can be effective in this regard, as are side-by-side designs. Buggies with this type of design can be a bit larger and could be difficult to maneuver through doorways.
The UPPAbaby Vista 2 pushchair twin is a great example, as it's a comparatively small model that has two additional seats and - most importantly - an auxiliary board that can be used to accommodate a third child.
Other smaller, three-wheeled models, like the phil&teds Dot, are also extremely flexible. This is particularly true with its clever "dot kit" that transforms it into an inline buggie. It has two different seating arrangements for children of various age groups and the front seat can be rotated so that it faces parents to provide a more intimate bonding experience. It has an enormous storage basket that is easy to fold. This is a great choice for families that are growing.
Comfort
With narrow tandem strollers, or versatile side-by-side buggies, parents can keep an eye on both kids at the grocery store, park or anywhere else. These lightweight doubles can carry two children of up to 50 pounds each and come with large pop-out canopy, which extends enough to provide real shade, with peekaboo windows and padded leg rests for the little ones to relax and kick back. The doubles also have one cupholder for each parent and an adjustable cupholder on the back of the seat. They also have an enormous underseat storage basket.
If you're just beginning to build an expanding family, consider adding the phil&teds double kit your dot buggy to transform it into an inline double perfect for newborns & toddlers alike. The clever 3-wheel design provides the best maneuverability and a simple kerb pop, whilst the sling seat is a fab newborn-friendly option that will allow for a perfect face to face bonding time. You can easily swap the sling seat for an infant car adapter as your children get older. You're ready to go on your next adventure with a luxury travel bag and rain cover included!
