Upvc Window Handles Replacement
Switching your window handles made of upvc is a relatively easy process that requires just a few tools and steps. The key to a successful replacement is identifying the handle type and measuring the spindle length.
There are two kinds of upvc window handle replacement handles: Espag and Cockspur handles. Espag handles come with a a 7mm square spindle which engages the locking mechanism of the frame.
Espag handles
Espag handles are a popular choice for upvc and timber frames. They are designed to work with espagnolette multipoint locking systems. They come with a 7mm square spindle which extends from the handle's back and then is inserted into the gearbox of a multipoint lock inside the window. They are also available in a variety spindle lengths. This is because each type of window handle is usually fixed to a different multipoint locking system, which has an entirely different arrangement and position of the gearbox.
The typical specifications for espag window handles include a button for the 'locked' position keys-locking, fire escape non-locking (where required). Some even meet Secure by Design standards which should give you added peace of mind. They are usually attached to the sash with two screws spaced 43mm apart.
There are many variations of the handle for espag. The most popular is the in-line or cranked model. In-line handles can be turned left and right. Cranked handles only work when the window is moving in the same direction. They can be set up clockwise or counter-clockwise. They can be fixed to the window either way, but it is essential that they are pointed in the same direction the old cockspur handle did.
The most important thing to keep in mind when selecting a replacement for a window handle made of upvc is to take the time to measure the spindle length. The spindle is the steel bar that protrudes from back of the door handle. Its length can vary between 10mm and 55mm. It is the length that is visible when the handle is in its unbroken state. This is the length that you'll have to match when buying an additional handle, because the spindle is the one that drives the lock in the window.
Some manufacturers offer magnetic espag handles that eliminate the requirement to cut spindles in order to fit. This can speed up the process of fitting by making it quicker and easier to remove and put in an alternative. It is nevertheless recommended to to check the spindle length to ensure a smooth operation of the handle.
Cockspur handles
Cockspur handles are used on older uPVC and aluminium window handle windows. they do not have an internal locking mechanism, but are considered to be safe due to the fact that the handle's nose is closed onto a wedge shaped block that is built to the frame of the window (this type of handle is not to be confused with timber windows, where there is an opening instead). Cockspur handles are still popular and there's a variety of options to match the styles of doors.
They are an easy and cost-effective option, and they can be key-locked to satisfy the requirements of home insurance. You can also choose the handle height to suit your frame. A lockable version, which adds an extra level of security and has been approved by Secured by Design, is also available.
These handle types are affixed to the sash of a tilt-and-turn or casement window by a spindle which runs through the baseplate. The handle is operated by a lever on either side of the handle and the handle spindle then engages with the wedge striker that is attached to the frame of the window to secure it in place. Cockspur handle kits are typically offered with right and left hand versions, and a wide selection of nose heights to fit most frames.
The key to the successful installation of cockspur handles is to get the right size wedge block. It is a small piece of plastic that is in the form of a ramp that you can replace with a newer one that is slightly larger to ensure the handle will close properly across the gap to seal against draughts. The fixing positions of these handles are standard and typically range between 38mm and 58mm in size. You should be able locate the right replacement without much difficulty.
When choosing a set of handles for cockspurs, it is important to also consider the spindle's length. It is the distance from the baseplate of the handle to the point at which the shaft of the handle extends down through the sash into the frame. It is crucial that this measurement is accurate to ensure the handles operate smoothly.
Tilt and Turn Handles
Designed specifically for windows that tilt and turn these handles are available as locking, non-locking or tilt safe option. These heavy-duty handles have a strong grip and detents are located at 90 degrees. Available in different finishes including black, white and gold. It is compatible with timber or PVCu tilt-and-turn windows.
These handles can be used to replace the upvc handle on older windows that aren't equipped with a lock. However, you should be aware that these are different from espag handles made of upvc as they aren't locked and operate in a different manner.
They have a 'turn before tilt' mechanism which allows the window to be opened inwards, and then dropped into a ventilation or hopper style position to let fresh air in. This type of handle, also referred to as DK or dry keep window handle, is often used in older double glazed window handles glazed properties.
When replacing a tilt-and-turn window handle, there are several things to consider. It is important to first make sure that the handle you pick is compatible with your windows. This includes examining the spindle size. The length of the spindle is the length of the metal rod that extends from the handle and into the locking mechanism. The longer the spindle the more secure it will be.
The handle itself is usually attached to the frame or the base of your window using a screw that is located above or below it according to the design of the window. The screws can be removed by using the help of a screwdriver, and after that the handle can be removed. Before you do this though it is recommended to place the handle in an open position to make it easier for you to access both of the screw holes.
After the handle is removed, you will be able to see two more screws that must be removed which will then reveal some decorative screw caps. The handles can then be removed by unwinding them using the flat-head screwdriver. The screw cap can be replaced after the handles are back in their original position on your windows.
Take a measurement of the length of the spindle.
The spindle of a window handle decides the method by which it opens and close. It's important to measure the old handle and then compare it to the spindle length of a brand new one. This will ensure that your new handle fits in the window in the right way and is easy to open and close.
Whether you want to replace your handles or simply enhance the look of your uPVC window, the handle style will have a significant impact on the way the window opens and locks. There are various handles to choose from which include a cranked espagnolette inline and Cranked. In addition there are tilt and turn handles which are designed to work with tilt-turn uPVC windows that can be opened both ways.
To replace the window handle first, locate the screw caps that hold it in place. These are usually located above or below the window handle and can be removed using the screwdriver. Once the screws have been removed, you are able to take the handle off the window frame.
The handle can be removed from the window frame and replaced with a brand new one. Make sure that the new handle is placed exactly the same way that the previous one was and that the spindle is aligned with the lock mechanism. Once the new handle is in place, it's time to insert the screws and fix the handle. You can then put the caps on the screws If they're missing.
It could be necessary to replace the handles on your uPVC window when they break. The handle could break due to a powerful force or the female portion where the spindle is inserted has deteriorated. The latter can be caused by people in your home pushing the handle while it's locked.
To replace your uPVC handle, you should choose a high-quality one that will last for a long time. You will save money in the end. It will also give your home an attractive and modern look.
