It could be a weapon with an increased damage range, an improved speed of reloading, or increased defense roll.
The amount of upgrades you perform will determine the amount of extras you will receive. Each upgrade will increase the number of extras by up to 3 points. Additionally, each upgrade will also boost the stat that is used to determine the main one by 1.
Some upgrades also provide a secondary random boost in addition to stat increases. These boosts are valuable and should be considered when deciding on which items to upgrade. Some of these boosts are only useful in specific builds (such as Whistan's shield for FB sorcs) while others can provide an enormous amount of value to certain collectors.

Costs
There are a few costs related to upgrades of items. The first cost is the upgrade itself. This cost can be expensive and is dependent on the new value of the item and the number perks it gains. Upgrades to a higher level (such as Explorer to Champion or Veteran to Heroic) can be expensive.
The other is the cost of items needed to upgrade. The items used are usually either Power Dices (dropped by monsters 21and over) or Minerals and Erons (obtainable by completing certain Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor quests). These materials are available in the inventory of an upgrade vendor.

These changes are based on an item's ilvl and may require special materials, for instance Adamantine.
Success Rate
Upgrades to items are based on a chance, and like any random system there is the possibility that the upgrade will fail. There are several methods to increase your odds of success. This includes using an item known as an Upgrade Pity or the addition of extra materials to the upgrade.
The Upgrade Pity is available through the NPC for the smithing process in Lost Ark. It increases the chance of an upgrade's success by some percentage. It is similar to the luck bonus that some items come with however it is more solid. It can be added to any weapon or armor and can be used up to three times.
It is also possible to add a variety of additional items to the upgrade, which increases its chances of success. These are shown in a separate window, above the + button. There are a few limitations. The maximum amount of material you can add is displayed directly above the + button.

If an upgrade is unsuccessful the system will be returned to its original state. This is typically a break, but it could also be an upgrade. Keep an upgrade in reserve until you are nearing the maximum level for an item.

However, it is important to know that not all items can be upgraded. The enchantment and upgrade rate is dependent on the rank of the item. The higher the item's rank is, the more Zeny items will be needed to upgrade it.
The system is expensive, especially if you are looking for high-level gear. It can cost between 100,000 z and 100 Carnium to upgrade an armor or weapon. As you rise in rank, your success rate decreases. You can increase the chance of upgrading an item by making use of cash shop items.
