Buying a Pram Newborn

Parents and caregivers can count on prams and pushchairs prams that can be multi-functional and versatile. They are the co-pilots of your child's journey.

A pram newborn is designed for newborns and babies and has an incredibly sturdy, deep carrycot with soft and secure walls.

A pram is typically equipped with a bassinet, but it can be converted to a stroller seat when baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns are incredibly fragile and should be kept as safe as you can. A stroller or pram equipped with safety features will ensure that your baby is in a safe and comfortable environment during travel. A pram or stroller must include a break that is working and a 5-point harness (2 shoulder straps with two waist straps and a crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person pushing it. Check that the pram you choose meets these standards.

Find a pram that allows your baby to ride in the recommended lying flat position. This position is supportive for your baby and helps prevent the risk of a dangerous curvature in their spine which could lead to spinal issues. By keeping the airways open, it decreases the risk for SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). The majority of prams that can be used from birth will include a seat unit that will recline into a lie-flat pram position for younger babies and then transform into a compact pushchair unit for older children.

The suspension on a pram is important because it can affect the smoothness of the ride. A pram with lots of suspension is likely to be more expensive but it might be worth it to purchase this feature if you are planning on using your pram everyday for a few years or more.

Always be sure to read the instruction manual and check the warning labels for your pram or stroller. When not in use, park your pram away from dangers like bicycles, traffic or other people. It is important to remove any bags or items from the handles since they could cause your baby to become caught or suffocate.

A pram or stroller should not be left unattended with a child in it even if they're asleep. They could wriggle into the pram and get stuck, or slide away and cause injury. It's not recommended to hang bags or other items off the handles as they could fall and hit your baby in the head.

Comfort

Possibility of lying flat seating is an absolute essential for infants as it promotes better back and lung development. A lot of prams come with a cocoon or carrycot that creates a cozy nest-like atmosphere for your newborn and is able to be removed from the frame. Certain seats, like the bucket-style seat on egg2, can't be reclined completely flat, but provide a comfortable ride for your child.

Some prams include a separate bassinet or seat for the newborn. This lets you easily switch between the sitting and sleeping positions based on the needs of your baby. This is sometimes called a "travel system" and is the initial configuration that you should try out with your newborn.

Choose a stroller with two shoulder straps which are cushioned and a five-point safety harness. It should fit your baby's body perfectly. Be sure to check for gaps or loose places where fingers could be trapped. Also, ensure that the buckles are simple for older children to use. It is also important to think about if you would like a parent-facing pram. It is great to keep an eye on your child, and makes them feel more secure by having their parents around.

Our parent testers loved the feature of certain prams, like the Graco Near2Me that lets you raise your baby and lower it at the touch of one button. This is a great way to maintain eye contact with your baby, and stay in contact, particularly when they're asleep. If you're looking to purchase a travel system, make sure to check whether the frame is compatible with your car capsule, as this will save you having to wake them up every time you're changing between twin pram, car and back.

Convenience

When buying a pram newborn it is essential to consider the needs of your baby's transportation. Some prams pushchairs prams have the option of a carrycot or bassinet which allow your baby to be laid flat (essential for their spinal development and breathing) while others have a seat that can recline to a lying-flat position. It is important to check the other accessories included in the pram, for instance the footmuff and the changing bag. These are essential to keep your baby warm in the event of cold.

It's also worth noting that some prams and strollers can be transformed into travel systems, allowing you to connect a car capsule with the frame using adaptors to allow you to easily transfer your child between the car and the pushchair without having to awake them. These are great if your lifestyle is busy or you don't have enough space your car boot to accommodate the pram. However, you should be aware that you will need to wait until your baby is old enough to sit up independently before you convert them from a car capsule into the pushchair.

Our parent tester discovered that the ability to raise or lower the seat of her 10-month-old son was a great feature. An excellent example is the Graco Near2Me which can lower to allow your little one to 'glide into your arms with the push of an button and maintain constant eye contact.

Also, ensure that your pram newborn has a solid base and wheels that are able to handle potholes and bumps. Ensure that you are able to fold it down easily and ensure that the safety harness is in good working order, fits comfortably and securely (five-point instead of three-point) and is able to be adjusted as your child grows. You should also be able to put your shopping bags and changing bags in the basket underneath (although remember that loading the pram with too much weight could cause it to tip over). If you're not sure what model to pick, check out a variety of models at the local retailer.
