Item upgrades allow players to raise the item level of armor and weapons that can be equipped. This increases the effectiveness of the equipment, and also sometimes adding buffs or the rerolling of an affix.

(Dice 6 are dropped by monsters 21+, Giants and Bosses; Dice 12 is dropped by Bosses). You will also need various quantities of Minerals and Erons.
Time
Upgrades to items are a method to boost your ship's stats and gear without needing to upgrade them. Upgrades aren't cheap but they are a good way to increase your stats without having to spend a lot of time in battle. It is important to understand the cost and benefits prior to investing your money or time.
Each upgrade increases the stats of the item by in a specific amount, and gives the chance to obtain a bonus substat. The random substat may be anything from a minor boost to a massive boost. Make sure to focus on the stats that perform Best item upgrader in slot first. They will give you a more profit for your investment.
You can view the amount of time needed to complete an upgrade when you open your inventory and select an item such as a ship, weapon or other accessory.
