Pragmatism is a philosophy that originated in the United States around 1870. It is a growing alternative to the analytic and continental philosophical traditions across the globe. The pragmatics Charles Sanders Peirce and William James (1842-1910) were the first to formulate the concept. They defined the philosophy through the publication of a series of papers, and later promoted it by teaching and demonstrating. Josiah Royce, (1855-1916) and John Dewey, (1859-1952) were among their students.
The early pragmatists challenged the fundamental theories of reasoning, which held empirical knowledge relied on a set unchallenged beliefs. Instead, pragmatists such as Peirce and Rorty argued that theories are constantly under revision; they are best considered as hypotheses in progress that may require refinement or rejection in the context of future research or experiences.
A fundamental principle of pragmatics was the rule that any theory can be clarified by tracing its "practical consequences" which are its implications for experiences in particular contexts. This approach resulted in a distinctive epistemological framework that is a fallibilist, anti-Cartesian interpretation of the rules that govern inquiry. Additionally, pragmatists such as James and Dewey advocated an alethic pluralism on the nature of truth.
As the Deweyan era waned and analytic philosophy blossomed, many pragmatists dropped the term. Some pragmatists, such as Dorothy Parker Follett and George Herbert Mead, continued to develop their philosophical ideas.
