Boosters

The upgrade system in World of Warcraft allows players to increase the quality of their equipment by spending money at an upgrader for items NPC. The system was introduced in Mists of Pandaria and was continued with the arrival of Warlords of Draenor. It's a good method to boost the level of your equipment, allowing you avoid the tedious grind of questing and avoiding numerous wipes in Mythic+ dungeons.

When an item is upgraded, the type of item upgrading it is upgraded to. Upgrades to a normal item result in an Exceptional version, whereas upgrades to an Exceptional version make an Elite. The Best item upgrader will retain its previous upgrade stats, but will also receive an additional bonus from its new base type. The bonus is randomly chosen. It could be a weapon with more damage range, an increased speed of reloading, or increased max defense roll.

The number of upgrades you do will determine the amount of extras you get. Each upgrade boosts the additional benefits by a factor of one, up to a maximum value of 3. Additionally, each upgrade will also boost the main stat by 1.

In addition to the stat boosts, some upgrades will also provide a random boost. These boosts are extremely beneficial and must be considered when deciding which items to upgrade. Some boosts are useful in specific builds (such as Whistan's shield for FB sorcs) while others could provide an enormous amount of value to certain collectors.

Some items have an inherent boos that are less beneficial when upgraded, such as the Goldwrap which gives additional slots for potion. These are often upp'd to inject more value into an item level upgrade that is perfect or close to being perfect.

Costs

Upgrades are accompanied by some associated costs. The first is the cost of performing the upgrade. The cost for this upgrade can be costly and depends on the new ilvl of the item and the number of perks it gets. Upgrades to a higher level (such as Explorer to Champion or Veteran to Heroic) can be expensive.

The other is the cost of the materials needed for an upgrade. The items used are typically either Power Dices (dropped by monsters 21and up) or Minerals and Erons (obtainable by completing certain Mists of Pandaria or Warlords of Draenor quests). These materials can be found in the inventory of an Upgrade Vendor.

This calculation determines the new Armor Class bonuses, damage dice, and other important stats. In certain cases the upgrade will provide additional advantages that can be picked from a variety of benefits.

In rare cases, the upgrade will only replace the most expensive perks. The cost for these modifications is determined by the item's current ilvl and may require a special substance, such as the adamantine alloy.

The higher the rank, the more zen and items you will need to upgrade it.
