Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, increasing its base stats or providing additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and access the kiln.

Upgrade components

To upgrade a weapon, armor or other item in the game, players will have to select it and then click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats and the required component or materials.
There are three kinds of upgrade components: universal upgrades, prefix upgrades and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, which are made up of gems, are able to be used in any type of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions are jewels that can only be used in legendary and ascended equipment. They provide the same benefits as jewels, but cannot be used in any other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add a suffix at the end of the names of items. For example adding a Glyph will transform a Staff wrapping of Minor Vigor into a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.
In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools, if a player replaces one glyph with another, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. If you replace any other upgrade component the item will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions, which can be swapped freely.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important variations from the previous versions. Gear is now broken down into tracks and items can be upgraded a set number of times before they're "leveled out." The costs for upgrading increase with each level, but the materials required do not. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a couple of important items to maximize their impact instead of spreading the upgrade costs across several pieces.
