Three Wheeled Buggies
Three-wheeled buggies are great for walking around the neighborhood or for jogging. Their compact design allows them to be maneuvered easily even in tight areas.
If you want a smooth ride with your baby, select models with 360deg front wheels that can swivel. However, they are more prone to punctures so be prepared with an repair kit.
Sturdy frame
Recent figures have been released revealing that the three-wheeled buggie - that noughties symbol of more money than sanity is on the verge of disappearing. Four-wheelers have replaced them, which are more versatile and easy to drive, while also looking stylish.
The larger the wheels are, the better your buggy will cope with uneven surfaces and bumpy pavements. Having larger wheels both front and back makes it easier to manoeuvre and more stable when walking downhill or on difficult terrain.
MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn and 3 year old and found it was able to withstand cobbles, grass, rough pavements, dirt tracks and kerbs. Kath said it felt solid to push and very solid on difficult terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable, so require periodic pumping) have suspension built-in, which was very comfortable for my children.
The size and shape of the seat is another aspect to think about. The seat should be big enough for your child to be comfortable and to allow them to lie down. Certain three-wheel buggies come with the option of lying flat, which allows the child to face you, whereas others only allow a face-to-parent one.
The Roma Atlas is a great option for off-road and wet walks. This buggy can be used as a one-person unit from birth and then adapts to take two children when your family grows. It is suitable for infants and toddlers until age 4 and includes a bumper bar, raincover, improved 5-point harness, and a large cushioned seat unit. Storage options are also good with a large basket with zip pockets on the hood and an attractive pouch on the rear of the seat unit.
Larger wheels
Larger wheels means that your buggy will be more stable on uneven terrain, which is ideal for buggies that are off-road. In addition, they allow you to maneuver the pushchair through narrow spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have the front wheels that swivel to assist you in maneuvering around tight corners, whereas others are designed for running and come with fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at the speed at which they can be pushed. This is particularly useful when you crash into the kerb or a tree. The front wheel will be lifted slightly to prevent hitting it.
A majority of 3 wheel infant stroller wheel pushchairs come with air filled tyres which means they are able to handle different terrains and are much more flexible than four wheelers. They are also lighter. However, they're susceptible to punctures so you'll need an repair kit, spare tube and pump in your bag.
Mountain Buggy Core, Venicci Carbo and the Venicci Carbo lux are some of our favourite 3 wheeled pushchair-wheelers. According to MFM's Kath, have larger wheels which according to her "perform well on grass, gravel roads and market town cobbles", and can easily move up and down kerbs. The buggies also have suspension that Kath says "smooths out bumps very effectively".
The downside of having larger wheels is that they make some buggies quite broad and make it difficult to get through narrow spaces. This is an issue if you plan to use it as a jogger, or need to fit through narrow doorways while on the move. Many models have compact folding options, which allow you to remove the front wheels and store them more compactly.
Easy to Manoeuvre
A three-wheel buggy can be more maneuverable for children. The way in which they are built ensures that the front wheels turn on a dime and are incredibly easy to manoeuvre, making them ideal for difficult terrain like cobbles, parks and bumpy pavements as well as dirt tracks.
MFM reviewer Kath tested a lightweight 3 wheel stroller wheeler with her infant and toddler and stated: "The Terrain was a pleasure to maneuver over tough ground and the swivel front wheel particularly useful. I was also awed by how well it dealt with bumps, particularly when using the hand-operated brake. It was very stable going downhill or on a rough terrain."
The only drawback to this amazing maneuverability is that the three wheel buggy's larger wheels do sometimes mean that it can struggle in tight spaces - something to consider especially if you live in a urban area. If this is the case then a four-wheeled buggy might be the better choice for you.

The sling is stowed inside the frame it is not positioned on top 3 wheel strollers like the modular seat. This creates a lower centre of gravity for your infant at the perfect height and also delivers great weight distribution, making it easier to pop over curbs (it is much easier to push the stroller up and over than you may think). MFM reviewer Kath said it's great on grass and cobbles. It's also a great alternative for running, thanks to its air-filled tyres as well as a lockable swivel wheel.
