Discourse Construction Tests

This study investigated Chinese learners making pragmatic choices when using Korean. It employed various tools for experimentation such as Discourse Completion Tasks, metapragmatic questions, and Refusal Interviews. Participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate ability who provided responses to MQs and DCTs. They were also asked to think about their evaluations and refusal performance in RIs. The MQ data were analyzed to determine the participants' pragmatic choices. The data were classified according to Ishihara's (2010) definition of pragmatic resistance. Interviewees also had to explain the reasons for choosing an atypical behavior in certain situations.

The results showed that CLKs on average, did not follow the norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did this even though they could produce patterns that were similar to native speakers. In addition, they were aware of their pragmatism. They attributed their decisions to learner-internal aspects such as their personalities and multilingual identities as well as ongoing lives. They also referred to external factors, like relational affordances. They also discussed, for instance, how their relations with their professors enabled them to perform better in terms of the linguistic and cultural standards of their university.

The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures or penalties they could be subject to when their social norms were not followed. They were worried that their local friends might consider them "foreigners" and believe that they are incompetent. This concern was similar to the concerns voiced by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These results suggest that native-speaker practical norms are no longer the norm for Korean learners. They could still be a useful model for official Korean proficiency tests. But it is advisable for future researchers to revisit their relevance in specific scenarios and in various contexts. This will help them better comprehend how different environments could affect the practical behavior of learners in the classroom and beyond.
