Upgrades can boost the value of armors, weapons and rings. They also increase bonuses such as crit chance and PvE damage.
For example, a weapon with the upgrade template ending in % will take on 3% attack damage every time it upgrades (relative to its previous value).
The cost of upgrading an item increases as it reaches the current level of the item. The cost increases as the level of the item increases.
Components
upgrade item components can be incorporated into trinkets, weapons and armor in order to give them a stat boost or add a bonus effect. They can be obtained through crafting, buying from vendors, trading with other players, or looting. Certain upgrades also come with special cosmetic effects.
Upgrade components can be placed in equipment with a slot for them; the item must have been at a minimum upgraded to blue level in order for the component to be applied. In contrast to other mods components can only be used once and can't be used multiple times or replaced with new upgrades. Infusions and enrichments are a particular type of upgrade component that is designed for non-amulet ascended and legendary equipment, as well as some of the non-ascended back items. Infusions and enrichments can be obtained by salvaging equipment that is ascended or completing a quest in the Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall campaigns.
An upgrade can include a suffix or prefix changing the name of the equipment to the upgrade (for instancefor example 'Canthan Armor Insignia" becomes Canthan Armor of Minor Vigor). Certain upgrades boost the Mark Level or Rarity of an item, allowing players create stronger versions with less upgrade crystals than they need to reach the same level using standard methods.
A boost upgrade can alter the attack or defence attributes of a weapon, or armor. These upgrades are available to be made using the Portative Forging Station once the player has completed the cutscene, and defeats the Crazed Mechanical. They can be dropped by enemies when upgrading other gear or by buying them from the cash shop for 500 upgrade crystals.
The player is able to have the maximum of five boost upgrades at one time; each upgrade increases the chance that a higher-level version of the item will be available at the time of the next reset. This gives players a reason to upgrade their gear even if they are unsure how much it will be improved following a reset.
Whether a boost upgrade is successful or not, the process may be costly and there is a significant chance that the item could be obsolete or even break when it fails; a failed upgrade will destroy the Upgrade Crystals and Assist Powder, as well as the upgraded item. This is alleviated by the availability cash shop items that can increase or even eliminate the chances of failure, and some upgrades that offer a bonus when reinserted into an item.
Glyphs
Glyphs are upgrade elements which can be put in special sockets on the Paragon Board. Glyphs boost the effectiveness of all nodes in the area around them as well as existing affixes on equipment. Glyphs are upgraded in many ways. We recommend upgrading them as quickly as you can to level 15.
You will often find in the endgame that putting Glyphs is the best method to upgrade your gear. These are the only upgrade component which can be upgraded to level 15 and offer a significant boost to your power on the Paragon Board.
Most of the upgrades in the game can be replaced however, Glyphs are only the one upgrade component that can be removed and re-placed without restriction. Only legendary equipment can be salvaged and re-placed using the aid of a Black Lion Salvage Kit.
The value of each Glyph is displayed when you select it in your inventory. You can replace it with an Glyph that is of the same or higher rank to boost the value of the Glyph.
There are Glyphs in the Black Lion Trading Post, as part of a Gem Store purchase or bundle with certain tools for gathering unlimited use, and through Faction Crypt raids. Each Faction Crypt can drop one of these Glyphs. There are also some rare glyphs you can find in any of the Faction Crypts.
After you have acquired the desired Glyphs you'll require them to be put on your gear. Each Glyph will grant a distinct bonus that boosts the stats of a specific set of nodes in the vicinity of the Glyph. Leveling

These recipes can be purchased from NPCs or found on the upgrade tab of the crafting table. Each completed Upgrade Recipe yields some Technology Points. These points can be used to level the item. Once enough points have been earned, the upgrade can be claimed and the additional bonuses will be added to the item.
When an individual player upgrade an item, the base item will be replaced by the new item. This means that the same piece of armor will be transformed into an weapon or shield once upgraded. The new item will also have its own set bonus. This could be a drawback in that the item could increase in price even if you do not require it.
If the player has enough tokens they can reroll item upgrades. This will cause the item to be traded for a new one, which will come with a level 1 base and a totally different set of bonuses. This is a good idea but it shouldn't be done often as it can waste resources.
Certain upgrades can be rerolled many times which increases their value and allowing the player to customize their gear. Dolphin's Gift is a good example, as it gives a buff if the player is repeatedly in or leaves the water. This item can be upgraded several times by increasing the maximum roll each time by 10 increments. This item is very useful in PvP. A properly rolled version can be worth as much as 50x the value of the non-upgraded version.
Requirements

However, the user can still continue to use the weapon or armor after the failure.
Whenever an item is upgraded the upgrades are applied from lowest to highest. This means that the weapon that is upgraded gains a crit chance increase that it will be applied prior to any attack damage increases. A new attribute known as Slots is now added to the item's definition and the value is recomputed every time an upgrade is applied.
The amount of resources needed to upgrade an item is based on the rarity rating as well as the number of upgrade slots. The cost of upgrading non-premium equipment is equal to its base value.
