Often times however, upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade equipment due to their high requirements.
Armor
Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They boost the performance of the item upgrading they are connected to. Upgrades to armor can be found in the world of the game and can be purchased from Blacksmiths at bonfires. Alternatively, they can also be rescued from items with upgrade components within them by using a specialist or more powerful salvage kit.
The level of an armor's or weapon's upgrade determines the amount of damage it is able to take on. The upgrade of an armor piece to maximum upgrade level will increase the damage it absorbs. It's important to remember that this will increase the weight of the armor, so it must be more heavy.
There are several types of armor upgrades available in the game, and each one has distinct effects. For instance, some upgrades will grant the armor a certain number of additional health points, while others will make it stronger and lighter. The kind of armor upgrade an item can receive will be identified by the name of the upgrade as illustrated in the table below.
Some of the upgrades also require magic or a combination of technology and magic, as indicated by the "Magic" and "Hybrids" entries in the table below. Some upgrades also require charges to use. These are identified as "Charges" entries in the table. These charges are either updated daily or never expire depending on the upgrade.
The cheapest method to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be gathered by exploring the environment and looting minor loot chests. Titanium is more expensive, however, it is available through smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Certain upgrades, such as the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied on armor pieces of the highest level. These upgrades can give a significant improvements in stats and are definitely worth the investment.
The player should be aware that upgrading a piece to its maximum upgrade level will increase its defense value. However, it will also decrease its agility and its speed. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The added defense usually isn't worth the weight and power costs of the upgrades.
Weapons
Weapon upgrades give players the ability to improve certain aspects of their weapon. For instance an upgrade can improve the damage that is caused by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of the rifle that snipes. Certain firearms also have upgrades that improve their innate capabilities. Frictionless materials (improves stability, reduces the risk of the possibility of overheating), and Kinetic coils (increases the projectile's acceleration to cause more damage) are two examples.
The majority of upgrades to weapons require a whetblade, one of three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. They can be obtained by finishing side quests, killing a certain amount of bosses or monsters, or by contacting the Weapon Upgrade NPC located in Central Flarine.
The process of upgrading a weapon, equipment Set piece or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade price that is based on a specific number of Bars. The more bars required to complete an upgrade, the more expensive the upgrade. The cost of the upgrades will be less if you have more than one of the upgrade materials.

To improve their skills faster, many players prioritise upgrading their weapons. Players should also upgrade the weapons their squadmates use to make them stronger. Shepard for instance, should upgrade the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more effective when accompanied by biotic specialists like Grunt and Tali.
Jewels
Jewels are used in the armor's sockets and weapons, enhancing the power of a character and bringing about secondary effects. Jewelry crafting is the process of making them, in which you combine the gemstone with specific reagents in a jewelry table. The higher the level of the jewel has, the more powerful its secondary effect. These reagents can be gotten from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses around the world, or through collecting Legendary Gear. You can also buy them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.
The Jeweler can boost the quality of gemstones in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Based on the level of the jewel, it will provide a different stat boost when slotted into weapons, gear and jewelry.
All levels of jewels can be made at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary gems that require you to be at a certain level to qualify for these. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with a identical jewel without destroying it. However you can only swap out one jewel in an item of equipment once.
It is typical to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. Jewels also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to them.
A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your shields and weapons. These glyphs provide a small boost in power and can be exchanged, however they are not guaranteed to appear as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also Scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like aegis and traits, aren't swappable and can only be retrieved using an Upgrade Extractor or salvaging them with Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool.
Trinkets
Trinkets are a great way to provide your hero with a variety of small, but beneficial, advantages. They can be obtained in the starter areas as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, and by completing road interactions. They can also be crafted by jewelers and later found or purchased at the Trading Post.
The first trinket players will be able to unlock is the cloak. It gives a small, but useful bonus in movement speed and the ability to evade. The player can then collect necklaces, amulets, and rings in a similar manner as they did with weapons and armor. Every piece of equipment has a slot for an upgrade that is either universal or jewel. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be put into any type of equipment however, jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and only works with specific types of trinkets.
These trinkets can also grant bonuses and abilities that are active when the hero is not in combat. This lets the hero be more effective while inactive and may also help to compensate for the absence of a strong team or the absence of any talent tree slots that would normally be filled with hero's ideal statistics.
In general, trinket upgrades should prioritize BiS (Best item upgrade in Slot) items you won't replace in the near future. Then, you should consider any items that have desirable statistics aren't as important as the iLevel for the item to be upgraded. This is especially true when you want to upgrade multiple stats on an item. It is better to upgrade one important stat instead of two subpar ones.
At the beginning of the game, players who are in the jungle will typically want to upgrade their yellow trinket to a red in the middle and top players usually choose the pink or green ward (depending on the matchup). These choices can impact a hero's ability to control the map.
In addition to the items mentioned above, players will find other trinkets in the form trophies and rewards throughout the game. These can be obtained through completing certain milestones within the story. For example, completing the main quest of a chapter or beating a boss. These achievements can be seen by selecting the appropriate achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
