How to Replace an audi a1 car key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It is a little tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you are having problems with this component, look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at a high speed I noticed a massive reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine with no sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.
I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows a temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is zero.

3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate a spare in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the position and speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injector, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these goes wrong, you will receive codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.
A malfunctioning G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, and/or a misfire while in the gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. The good thing is that they are very affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of a Bosch sensor, like ours. You can also choose the GM version of this unit is also a good choice.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the replacement audi keys's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is rotating. If the sensor fails, it will cause problems for the transmission and the rest of the car's components.
The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then processes this signal to regulate fuel, timig, and boost, and also transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can check for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Additionally, you can examine the continuity between pins T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. There should be a resistance of approximately 1000 ohms between these points. This part is common across the Audi tt key programming 80-100-200-RS2 range, beginning with the 1985 MC and up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 Du You may also find some good ones in wrecking yards.
