Weapons

When a weapon gets upgraded, it will gain an initial damage bonus as well as an adjustment factor that affects other stats. The weapon can also gain a variety of upgrade components that offer additional attributes or effects as well as unique cosmetic effects. These upgrades can be added to armors, weapons, trinkets and gathering tools. The majority of them require that the equipment has an upgrade slot and meets certain requirements. When a weapon or armor piece has an upgrade component in it, it is able to be upgraded with a different one, but the prior upgrade will be destroyed (except for legendary equipment and upgrades). Upgrade components can be retrieved by using the Black Lion Salvage Kit Ascended Salvage tool, or a higher-tier salvaging tool for an item.

A weapon can also be upgraded to include a Calibration attribute that improves certain stats, like Weakspot damage or Crit Rate. This can be done via the Gear Workbench interaction menu. Based on the tier of the weapon the process can be repeated up to four times.

When the weapon is at the maximum level of upgrade, it may be reforged using a variety of different types of upgrades to increase specific stats or to add bonuses and effects. These upgrades can be applied at once and the effects depend on how rare the weapon is.

Two Blacksmiths can be upgraded in the game: Blacksmith Iji on the Road to the Manor Site of Grace and Smithing Master Hewg at the Church of Elleh hub. Both require different upgrade materials: Smithing Stones for standard weapons and Somber Smithing Stones to alter the damage that a weapon inflicts.

It is generally advised to improve weapon damage first, then armour defense, then the other secondary stats that are required by your build. Particularly, it is common to see melee druids enhancing their weapon before they upgrade any other gear, as this helps maximise DPS. This is particularly applicable to enchantments, which can be extremely efficient in increasing a weapon's damage and other stats.

These abilities can be helpful in combat, for instance granting a buff to attack speed or blocking. Certain upgrades provide effect that are passive and can be useful for example, decreasing damage when wearing armor, or increasing the chance to dodge an attack.

Based on the type of armor being used, upgrading an item may require multiple tries. If a player is looking to upgrade Steelclash armor to Dragonscale, then the first attempt will result in a new Dragonscale armor that has a defense base between 59-67. The second attempt will result in the creation of a Dragonscale armor that has the base defense of 67-77.

This makes them useful for certain builds. There are other ways to increase the stats of armor beyond the use of upgradeable armor, such as the engineer trait to boost armor penetration, or the challenger trait to lower the weight of the entire armor.
