Item upgrades are a key part of gearing up your character. Upgrades increase the damage of your item upgrader mod and the ability to enchant.
They also provide rewards and upgrades. The Blacksmith is able to sell them to you.
The upgrade button is available on any item. Each item recycled adds a level to the gauge of upgrade.
Weapon
When a weapon is upgraded, it gains a base damage bonus as well as a scaling factor that can affect other stats. The weapon may also gain a variety of upgrade components that offer additional attributes or effects and some even have unique cosmetic effects. These upgrades can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, gathering tools, and trinkets. Most require that the item is equipped with an upgrade slot and meet certain specifications. Once the weapon is at the maximum level of upgrade, it may be reforged using a variety of different upgrade types to boost specific stats or add other bonuses and effects. These upgrades can all be applied at once, and their effects will differ based on how rare the weapon is.
There are two Blacksmiths in the game who can perform these upgrades: Blacksmith Hewg in the Church of Elleh hub area, and Smithing Master Iji in the Road to the Manor Site of Grace. Both require different upgrade materials: Smithing Stones for standard weapons, and Somber Smithing Stones for modifying the kind of damage a weapon can cause.
Generally, it is advised to improve weapon damage first, then armour defense, and then the other secondary stats that are required by your build. In particular, it is common to see melee druids upgrade their weapon before any other gear, because it helps maximise DPS. This is particularly applicable to enchantments that increase a weapon's stats as well as damage.
Armor

The second attempt would result in a new Dragonscale armor with an initial defense of 67-77, and the list goes on.

It doesn't affect glyphs, enchantments or cursed weapons or armor or items that are generated to solve the dangers in rooms.
Although it appears to be the normal eye of a newt this mysterious object appears to affect your vision in ways beyond just reducing your field view. At the present time, this trinket can increase the total health benefits of drinking potions of healing, waterskins and wells of health by X%. It also grants eyesight on enemies within Y tiles. This is not a stacking feature with Heightened Senses.
Skull Cavern is where you will find Trinkets after completing the Mastery Cave. You will find them when you defeat Monsters and chests and crates. They can't be found in the Mines or Volcano Dungeon.
Place the trinket in the Anvil whenever it is required to be upgraded. This will have an unintended impact on the trinket either extending its lifespan or enhancing its effects. You can reforge the Trinket multiple times as often as you want, though it will always have a different effect than the one it was when you forged it.
You can upgrade your Trinkets in the Alchemy Station by placing them into a Magical Catalyst. This will cost 6 energy, however it will increase the trinkets power by a tiny amount.
