The item will retain all of its pre-upgrade statistics, but will also gain an additional bonus due to its new base type. This bonus will be randomly chosen from the following categories: an opportunity to acquire weapons with a higher damage range, a chance to obtain an improved reload speed, or the chance to obtain an increased defense roll.

In some cases the upgrade can grant additional perks that can be selected from a list of available advantages.

In rare instances the upgrade will replace only the highest-costing perks. Occasionally, the upgrader will make other modifications to an item, for example, changing the type of weapon damage or or removing an operative or unwieldy property. These modifications are based on an item upgrade's ilvl. They may also require special materials, such as adamantine.
