Item upgrades can be used to improve the stats of a particular item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may increase the rarity of an item or mark Level, and also boost other stats.
Upgrading gear in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests Each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a set amount.
Item Level
The value of an item's stats base increases as it is upgraded. The value is the sum of all of an item's upgraded perks (attack magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be costly, depending on the person you hire and what you decide to do. This is due to how many perks have to be replaced to allow the item to get upgraded.
Item level is a commonly used measure of power, and is visible on all tooltips for items. It also serves as a gating requirement when queueing for dungeons, scenarios and raids, and to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is limited to the lower levels). Players can see their average item level in their character sheet.
The level of an item can help players compare the power of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a measure of the item's condition and quality. Comparing items in a vendor's stock can be done by using the item's level.
On PC, you are able to view the item level by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. The item will be displayed with its full description, including the ilvl. You can also locate it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are a variety of theories on how the level of an item level upgrade is determined. One theory is that the item level is a number derived from a formula that calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that different perks have different values and gems in sockets add to the item's overall value. This can lead to a calculated item's ilvl that is typically very close to Blizzard's real item level.
This is not the only factor that influences the ilvl of an item. The degree of the area in which the item was dropped may alter its stats. For instance it can add a level to the item's haste or crit rating. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have a higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game makes use of a lot of them in different ways to encourage players to use multiple weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the most effective." The base stats of a weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat mods that are in turn boosted by the player's level.
The upgrades to items add by boosting certain stats on the item. The rarity of an item determines its upgrade cost. For example, a grey or white item can only be upgraded once, while an item with rare tiers will be upgraded several times with higher prices.
Another way to change the stats on an item is through affixes. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and are available in all sizes and shapes. The affixes could be used to give the item additional damage, or give a specific capability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing cooldowns) or make the item unique by giving an exclusive name to the item.
Currently, all affixes can be changed by selecting them from the upgrade window and pressing the green button using circles arrows. This will cost a certain amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges just like the other rerolling methods.
Players can upgrade an item with a specific stat, or reroll affixes. The stat ranges are determined by the item's level. However each item will include at least one stat in that range unless they are an exclusive item, or a God Roll from a boss in a raid.
This is another aspect that could be changed by adding an option to upgrade the equipment without rerolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to increase. Similar to the base equipment, it will have to be done per item, and the interface for item comparison wouldn't display all possible stats simultaneously.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items, the properties that are generated by loot, and the intensity of these properties. It doesn't, however, directly affect damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is particularly beneficial for early game runs, since players tend to prioritize defenses and weapon scaling over raw damage gains.
Luck can also boost the chance of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith's overall upgrade chances that increase with each new level of item. These can also be increased with the use of anti-materials, such as a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
Weapons, shields, and armor can be created or spawned with the Luck property, which has the default value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to increase the value of 40 luck or to boost the Luck of an item up to 140.
Furthermore some items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow, can be equipped to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5percent. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted with the right ingredients.
Item Failure
Not all upgrades work. Cash shop items can be used to increase the chance of success of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their item if it is not successful.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successfully upgrading the item. This can be increased by using Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased so high, and the probability that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%..
The success of an item upgrades is also influenced by the Luck of that item. All items have an initial success rate of 25% and each item with Luck increases that chance by an additional 5%.
Note that item upgrades are rendered above the inventory items which means that enchantment glints and other effects may be obstructed by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader (Www.Diggerslist.Com) CORE client config.
