Newborn Bedside Cot
A newborn bedside baby bed cot is a compact sleeper that allows new babies to share a space as their parents without the dangers of co-sleeping (which the AAP cautions against due SIDS and suffocation). It also makes mid-night nursing sessions and child care more convenient.
This sleeper features a firm mattress to support the backs of babies and reduce the risk of SIDS. It can be swiveled on your adult bed so that you can lift your baby to snuggle them at sunrise or for late night nursing.

A bedside crib with changing table crib, also referred to as a bassinet or cosleeper is a bassinet-style crib that can be attached to your existing bed. This lets you reach your baby easily and safely for a late-night feed or cuddles. They are a great choice for mothers or new parents recovering from a csection as they provide the baby with easy access and don't require you to get up.
There are a variety of designs available, from the basic ones that have the drop-down side, to more sophisticated ones that offer various adjustment options, such as the ability to tilt or raise. Most convert to a standalone crib for napping during the daytime or when your baby is a few months old and sleeping longer at night.
One of our favourites is the Maxi-Cosi Lora which was nominated for the 2021 Mother&Baby awards, including Best Cot Crib, Best Cot, or Moses Basket. MFM home tester Emily noted how stylish and modern the design was. She also appreciated the fact that it could be used as a bassinet or attached to your existing bed for a safe side-by-side sleep. She also liked the plush mattress that was able to pass our test of firmness, and the fact that it comes with a manual rocking feature that can be set to a slight incline for reflux sufferers.
But she wasn't thrilled with the feature of a non-mesh panel at its lower end, and thought it was a bit bulky to move from room room frequently. She also found it to be a little heavy to carry up and down the stairs when it was folded up into its travel bag.
Size
A bedside cot is the bassinet, which is attached to the side of your bed. You can easily reach your baby bedside cot's side to feed them, change nappies or comforting during the night. It's perfect for mothers recovering from a c-section.
The NHS and Lullaby Trust advise that you place your baby in the same room as you, but keep them separate from you for the first six months since this will help decrease the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome). A crib for your bed is a safe method to achieve this because it is low-sided and lets you be able to easily access your baby during the night.
It is essential that your baby is sleeping on a firm and not an extremely soft mattress. A mattress that is soft can increase the risk of suffocation for newborns, since they lack the motor control necessary to turn. This mattress is made of skin-friendly and breathable materials. It is comfortable for your baby but sufficient to be secure.
Mum Jasmin was happy that the crib didn't take up the entire space in her room and thought it was the ideal size for a newborn. She also stated that the mattress was of good quality, unlike others which are thin and fragile. She also appreciates that it has a storage space underneath for clothes and bedding which many bassinets don't.
MFM mum home test Mehack is a fan of the removable side wall that lets you drop it to make it easier access to your infant. She also loves the fact that legs can be placed under the bed to look less bulky and occupy less space on the floor. She's also amazed by how it was simple to move around her house when she needed to do checks and feedings during the night.
The CoZee Air crib is a favorite among parents. It was awarded the Gold Award in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards. It features a smart design with four pulleys built-in to raise or lower the crib and has a large storage basket to store your baby's blankets, toys and other essentials. It is also light and easy to assemble, making it ideal for traveling with your baby.
Safety
When selecting a newborn bedside cot (writes in the official wiki.iurium.cz blog), it is important to keep safety in mind. Official safe sleep advice from both the Lullaby Trust and NHS recommends that babies not sleep in parent's beds due to the dangers of suffocation, heat exhaustion and a higher risk of suffering from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Bassinets that are placed in bed allow parents to keep their infant close to help with nighttime feedings as well as monitoring and comforting without needing to get out of bed.
This close proximity can help breastfeeding mothers as it allows them to be attentive to the needs of their infant while they sleep. This can help maintain the supply of milk and encourage breastfeeding. Some bedside cots have adjustable height features that will help ensure that the bassinet is at a comfortable height for both mother and baby for ease of access during feedings or care.
A majority of bassinets come with a firm mattress that is designed to reduce the risk of suffocation, and meets industry standards. This is essential because newborn's bones are soft and not fully developed, and require support to prevent damage. The mattress should be covered with a fitted sheet to reduce the risk that dust mites, as well as other allergens, could cause a child to be suffocated. It must be kept clean and free of irritants.
Some cribs on the bed can be tilted. This is beneficial for babies who have reflux or digestive issues. But, it should be done with care and with caution. It's also important to avoid putting pillows, duvets or padded crib bumpers to the bassinet, as they can create a suffocation risk for your baby bedside cot. They should only be used when the cot is set on an even surface.
It's also worth considering a bassinet with a secure attachment system that can be easily fixed to your bed without the necessity of tools. This can be especially beneficial for parents who struggle to lift their child in and out of the cot, or who are worried about accidentally rolling over during sleep. If your bassinet does have secured attachments, it's a good idea to regularly make sure it's secure and that there aren't any gaps or loose components that could cause danger.
Comfort
If you're expecting your first child, the safety of your child is definitely one of your top priorities. There's a new solution to sleep that lets you keep your baby close to you in the evening, without the risk of sharing a bed. The crib for newborns is a bassinet-style cot that can be attached to the side of the bed. It allows you to safely lift your baby out towards you for feedings and comfort. It is an excellent option for mothers recovering from a C-section since it removes the need to stand up or to bend over.
Modern bedside cots for newborns should be fitted with a firm, flat mattress to encourage safe sleep practices and reduce the risk Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Bedding should be simple with just a cot sheet and a blanket tightly tucked at the bottom. Avoid toys, bumpers and pillows that may be thrown over your baby, creating an obstructive risk. If your baby has been used to being swaddled during a few weeks, you can use either a swaddle, or a baby sleep bag. However, it is recommended that this be removed after they have the strength to remove them.
Some bedside cot bed cribs feature a removable or drop-down side that provides an easy access to your baby to feed and comfort them in the middle of the night. This is a wonderful option for parents who wish to keep a strong bond with their child while still following NHS safe sleep advice. If you plan to co-sleep with your child, it is crucial to be aware that this practice could increase the risk of SIDS. This is especially true if a parent accidentally rolls on their infant when they are asleep.
A fabric that is breathable is an important safety factor, since it's designed to keep your baby cool and comfortable throughout the night. This is particularly crucial if you intend to sleep with your newborn since the chance of overheating is higher during sleep. The SnuzPod4 features a unique side panel made of breathable mesh, which helps to improve the flow of air and keep your baby warm in their bed.
