What is a bedside crib?

A bedside crib, also known as a bassinet or co-sleeper is a baby cot attached to your adult bed. This allows your newborn to sleep with you in a safe environment. This is a type of safe co-sleeping that does not increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing and can help you build a bond with your new arrival.

These cots have an end that can be lowered to allow you to reach your baby easily at night to soothe and feed them. This is particularly beneficial for mothers who are recovering from an op. Many of them are mobile or foldable, which means you can bring them along on trips and use them as a temporary sleep option for babies who aren't yet ready to move to a full-sized cot.

Look for a crib with a mattress that is breathable, as well as an appropriate cover to shield your baby from stains. You might also want to purchase baby-safe items such as an infant blanket or a teether.

If you're looking for a more long-term solution cribs are available with conversion kits that allow you to convert them into a toddler bed or cot when the time is right. This is great for extending their life span and making the transition smoother. Some have a removable top section that can be converted into a bassinet, and some can be used on either an ordinary or high-rise adult bed. This is a great option for families that plan on traveling frequently or switching between bedrooms during the night. It is also important to consider how big your bedroom is to ensure that you can fit the crib in comfortably. A lot of cribs have an adjustable riser that can be used to create an inclined position for infants who suffer from reflux.

Anna discovered that the CoZee was a safe and comfy sleeping space for her infant. She was pleased that it didn't rock like some other models, so it didn't wake her up at night when she was trying to soothe her baby during feeds. She also liked that the sides of the chair could be lowered so she didn't have to reach over her partner to lift the child out for nighttime feedings.

The CoZee is available in oak and charcoal and is a chic addition to the bedroom. It's more stylish than other cribs we've tried that are usually utilitarian. It's also light at 11kg, and comes with a carrying case that allows you to take it with you on vacation or when moving house. The only additional items you'll need to buy are a waterproof cover and a safety strap for co-sleeping. The instructions and illustrations are easy to follow once you open the box.

The Maxi-Cosi Lora

The Iora is a bassinet for infants designed to make parents feel connected with their infant while they sleep. It can be adjusted upwards and downwards and shifted through three different slide positions, to fit beside the parent's bed or in the corner, so the baby is always in reach. The mesh siding lets air circulate through, allowing you to quickly see your baby. You can also keep additional pajamas or other items in the large storage basket beneath.

The Iora is a smaller bedside cot 6 months plus cot that can fold flat. It also comes with a travel case so it can be carried anywhere. It was easy to move around from room to room and our mum testers believed it was the perfect size for a bedside crib and travel cot crib. They also liked the large storage basket, which is ideal for stowing spare bedding or nappies.

This is an excellent choice for parents who are looking to co-sleep but don't wish to share their beds, or whose partners might be suffering from mobility issues, such as arthritis or back pain. Our mum testers love the convenience of being able to access their child in the Iora and that it has an optional reflux incline to help alleviate gas.

Our mums also love the fact that it meets NICE guidelines, which are to place the infant in the crib or Moses basket on its own (with no toys, blankets, pillows, etc). They also say that the mattress is firm and comfortable for the baby and easy to find sheets for. It isn't as light as other smaller bedside crib travel cot cribs, though and if you're looking for something lighter and easier to move around with, look at alternatives on our list.
