What is a bedside crib?

A bedside crib (also known as a bassinet or co-sleeper) is a baby cot that attaches to your adult bed, allowing your baby to sleep in a safe environment with you. This is a form of safe co-sleeping that does not increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing, and can help you bond with your new arrival.

The cots usually have a side that can be raised, so you can easily reach your infant during the night for feeding and comforting. This is particularly beneficial for mums recovering from an op. Many of them are foldable or portable which means you can use them to travel or as an interim solution for infants who aren't quite ready to move into a full-sized crib.

When shopping for a crib to sleep in Choose a crib that has a breathable mattress and a cover to protect your newborn from the stains. You'll also want to buy baby-safe items such as a blanket and a soft toy.

If you are seeking a long-term solution, some cribs come with conversion kits that allow you to convert them into a toddler bed or cot when the time is appropriate. This is a great way to extend their life and making the transition more seamless. Some even have a detachable top section that transforms into a bassinet, and some can be used on the regular or high-rise adult bed. This is a good choice for families that are planning on frequent travel or switching between bedrooms throughout the night. You should also think about the size of your room to ensure that you can squeeze the crib comfortably. Many cribs have risers which can be used to create an incline for babies who have reflux.

She also liked that the side was lowered so she didn't have to reach out over her partner to carry the baby out for night time feeds.

The CoZee is available in charcoal or oak and is a chic option for any bedroom. The Maxi-Cosi lora

The Iora is a bassinet that can be placed at the bedside that helps parents feel connected to their infant while they sleep. It can be adjusted up and down, and moved through three different slide positions to fit beside the bed of the parent or in the corner, so the baby is always within reach. As opposed to other bedside cribs Iora is a standout among other bedside crib with wheels cribs. Iora can be folded flat and comes with a bag for travel which allows it to be taken wherever. It was easy to move around from room to space, and our mum testers believed it was the perfect size for a bedside crib. The large storage basket is great to store bedding and nappies.

This is an excellent choice for parents looking to sleep in a co-sleeping arrangement but do not wish to share their beds, or whose partners might have mobility issues, like back problems or arthritis. Our mom testers love the fact that they can easily access their child in the Iora and it also has an option to tilt the bed upwards to help with gas.

Our mothers appreciate the fact that it meets NICE guidelines, which are to place the infant in the crib or Moses basket on its own (with no toys, blankets pillows, etc.). They also say that the mattress is firm and comfortable for babies and is easy to find sheets for. It's not as light as other cribs that are smaller on our list, so if prefer something lighter and easier to move around, consider a different alternative.
