How to Replace an audi car key case G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49) and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.
The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can start spark and injectors accordingly.
If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).
It's a bit tricky to test since there are different pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is functional, it should read approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at a high speed, i noticed a huge decrease in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the 4th one was dry. When I start the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.
I also tried to reset PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars while the actual pressure is zero.
I don't know what to do. I think I've eliminated everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any suggestions, please share them! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. Test them out by putting your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's end). They should be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.
Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter and gears that shift faster than normal and/or misfiring when in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you notice any of these signs. The good news is they are very cheap and readily available, especially when you're looking at an Bosch model, which is what ours are. If you prefer, GM's version of this part is an option.
5. Tachometer
A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your car. It is an important part of the transmission of your audi a4 key replacement because it relays information to the ECU on how fast or slow the car's engine is turning.
