Types of Hob and Oven
A oven and hob is a common part of most kitchens, and comes in a variety of designs. You can also mix different types such as domino, electric and gas to meet your cooking needs.
Safety features like child and position controls can be added to a hob. These features can stop children from accidentally altering the temperature setting or touching the stove.
Types
In the center of every kitchen, the stove takes centre stage and can play a huge part in how your cooking is executed. There are a number of different types of hob and the one you pick will depend on what your particular cooking requirements are.
Gas hobs are a classic option and provide a quick heat-up function and instant reaction to temperature changes. They are a popular choice for professional chefs as they offer precise control. They aren't as easy to clean as other stoves and could require more care.
Electric hobs are made of ceramic with a flat surface and heated elements underneath. They are available in different sizes and with four to six cooking zones. Each zone is equipped with a distinct heating element which you can regulate individually. This lets you boil potatoes on one ring and cooking sausages in a different. This type of hob is quicker to warm up than gas, and is an alternative that is safer for children as the cooking zone becomes hot only when you place a pot on it.
Ceramic hobs are a fashionable and user-friendly option to electric and gas hobs. They have a smooth, hard-wearing surface that is easy clean, but they aren't as quick to respond to temperature fluctuations as other hobs and are slower to cool down.
The Domino hob is a space-saving alternative to gas and electric hobs. It combines ovens beneath the cooking surface. They are great for kitchens with limited space. They can also be used in kitchenettes and flats. They are typically less expensive than standard hobs and are energy efficient however they are also fragile and require more attention than other types of cookers.
Gas
Gas hobs are cooktops that have burners that are easily fitted into the kitchen countertop to create a seamless look. Gas hobs are typically powered by LPG or natural gas, however they can also be powered by propane gas. They have a modern and sleek design that can bring a touch of class to your modular kitchen.
A traditional gas stove has a range of burners, usually 4, but often as many as 6. The flames are ignited using a match or by turning the knob. The flames are then controlled by a set of valves which can be adjusted to set the temperature.
Contrary to this, modern built-in gas hobs have multi-flame burners that allow you to control the inner and outer rings of each burner to precisely manage your cooking. These burners are faster and more reliable than older models.
Traditionally, it was necessary to keep a gas stove on continuously to ensure that the burners were always hot and fuelled. This was a safety measure to avoid any mishaps such as not turning off the oven when the stove was lit by a match or the pilot flame. Modern cookers are designed with safety in mind. They include a built-in flame safety device that shuts off burners automatically should the pilot light fail.
Gas stoves and hobs should be inspected, cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. The best way to do this is to book a maintenance visit with a licensed Gas Safe registered engineer. They will not only ensure that your appliance is functioning properly, but will also offer expert advice on how you can prevent any future issues.
Electric
When it comes to designing your perfect kitchen the countertops, fridge freezer and ovens will always get the most attention but a good hob is equally important. Whether you opt for a conventional, induction or gas cooker, the type of hob you select will affect how your kitchen operates and how easy it is to keep clean.
Electric hobs use heating elements underneath the glass surface, which is typically cleaned using a non-abrasive cleaner. These elements are activated when you turn on the oven and hob and can be adjusted to different power levels using a control knob. It may take them a little bit longer to heat up however once they are heated, they have a tendency to offer better and more consistent temperature control. They have built-in indicators that tell you if a zone is hot or not.
Typically, these come in a range of four to six sized rings that can be notched up to various power levels. They are ideal for cookware that is flat but aren't the best choice for cast iron pans because they can get hot. Some models come with dual-ring designs (such as the Belling BEL CH602T) that permit boiling water on one ring while you saute sausages on a different. Some even come with a 'boost' feature which concentrates high-powered heat onto one ring for stir fry cooking sauteing meat, or boiling large pots of water.
Induction hobs differ from standard electric models as they use electromagnetic fields to directly heat your cookware, rather than the conventional method of gas flames. This allows them to achieve precise temperatures in a short space of time and makes them highly energy efficient. They feature a cool to the touch surface and flashing indicators that indicate whether a ring was used or is still hot.
Ceramic
Ceramics can be used to create functional or decorative objects. It is made by mixing earthen elements, clay, powders and water to the desired shape, then fired in a high-temperature oven, also known as the Kiln. Once it's been made, it can then be coated or painted with decorative materials in order to add texture and color.
Ceramic hobs blend design and function to create an impressive piece of modern kitchen furniture. They operate by using radiant heating technology, passing an electric current through the coiled elements hidden beneath the black glass surface of the hob. These generate heat when activated. This is transferred to your pan through an infrared system. You can adjust the strength of the heating by adjusting the controls with touch or knobs.
Certain ceramic hobs feature dual rings, with the smaller and the larger cooking area. This lets you choose the ideal size for your pan. You can also get hobs with booster burners that produce high-powered heat quickly ideal for searing meat or bringing pots of water to the boil quickly.
Ceramic cooktops are more efficient in energy than other types of hobs as they take longer to heat up and switch temperatures. You can also opt for vented hobs, which integrate a ventilation system with the cooktop made of ceramic. This ensures that smoke, steam, and cooking smells do not stay in your home.
Induction
Induction hobs are equipped with heating elements that are made up of copper wire coils. The coils create electromagnets which make the pans hot on top of them. The coils stir up free electrons within the base metal of your pan, which then transfers heat evenly to your food. The surface of the stove is never hot and the cooking zones automatically turn off as soon as your pan is removed.
Induction hobs are generally more expensive, but they also get hotter faster and use 30-70% lower energy than gas or other kinds. They are also easier to clean, because the surface of the hob isn't hot, and only the contents of your pan do.
Some manufacturers have an induction model with extra features, such as a pause function that shuts off energy to your stove when you walk away, or the ability to link two cooking rings simultaneously with the same power to provide increased flexibility. They are commonly referred to as FlexInduction hobs and can be more expensive than traditional models, however they're worth considering if you prefer to multitask.
Our favorite is this induction hob from Smeg, which has four cooking zones that are large enough that have a bridge function, as well as nine power levels that give you a variety of options for those who want to cook with a lot of passion. In our tests, it did well with precise control and quick heating when making pancakes. The cooker also comes with dishwasher built-in and an automatic pan detection function to make cleaning even easier. The only problem is that there are only a few compatible pans that can use it to cook with appliances with magnetic bases. It could be a problem if you have a large amount of cookware that is not compatible, or only a small portion of it is compatible with induction hobs.
