Item upgrades are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can be a fantastic source of damage and more AD or even more attachments.

Weapons

Jewels
Jewels are utilized in the armor's sockets and weapons, enhancing the stats of a weapon and providing additional effects. The quality of a gem can be improved by the Jeweler, in stages that range from Crude to Royal. Depending on the tier of the jewel it will give different stat boost when slotted into gear, weapons and jewelry.
The Jeweler can craft all tiers of gems, with the exception of rare and legendary ones which require an appropriate level to obtain. Like other upgrade components jewels can be swapped with a jewel of the same type without damaging it. You can only replace the jewel once in an item level upgrade of equipment.
It is common to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. Apart from improving performance, the jewels create an outer layer that is more durable than metal, which means that repeated friction from pivots won't damage them as easily.
A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs that can enhance the look of your weapons and shields. These provide a small bonus and can be swapped freely, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded, like jewelry, at the Jeweler for gold, and also a Scattered Crystal. Glyphs can also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components like traits or aegis can't be swapped, and can only be retrieved by using an Upgrade extractor or salvaging with a Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage.
Trinkets
Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that bestow a wide range of small but useful advantages to your hero. They are available in the starter area as loot or as personal story rewards. They can also be obtained from vendors and by the completion of road interactions. They can be purchased from the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.
The first trinkets that a player can unlock is the cloak, which gives a small, but valuable boost in speed of movement and evasion. The player can then acquire necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar fashion to how they acquired weapons and armor. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that can accept either a universal or jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades are smaller and can be used on any device. Jewels are not upgradeable or replaced, and can only be used with certain trinkets.
These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't engaged in combat. This allows the hero to be more efficient when they are not active. It also helps compensate for the lack of a excellent team or talent tree slots which are usually filled by the hero's Best item upgrade stats.
A good general rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrader-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace soon, followed by items with desirable stats that are less important than the iLevel of the item to be upgraded.
